This paper undertakes a comparative study of two large UK clothing plants in the 1990s with earlier twentieth century studies of clothing workshops undertaken in the late 1950s by Cunnison and Lupton, and in the late 1970s by Edwards and Scullion. Traditionally the clothing industry is identified with a history of low wages and poor conditions of employment. Though increasingly subject to global market pressures, research findings from this study illuminate workplaces in the 1990s with much in common with the aforementioned historical studies, offering working conditions that leave the clothing worker isolated, individualised and struggling to survive.

This study intends to explore the key factors that affectthe volume of a country’s used clothing exports. The multiple regressionanalysis shows that there is a statistically significant positive relationshipbetween a country’s new clothing sales and its used clothing exports. Also, asnew clothing gets cheaper in the retail market, a country would export moreused clothing and vice versa. Further, used clothing exports from developedcountries were much higher than in developing economies when holding otherfactors constant. The results suggest that we can do more on the supply side tocurb the surge of used clothing exports. The results also confirm thesignificant price impact on the generation of used clothing exports. Further, thefindings suggest that developed countries have a crucial role in addressing theused clothing export problem, even those with a relatively small population.

Export is an important factor of economic growth.Base on the data from 1980-2004,this paper describes the characteristics of China's textiles and clothing export and studies the effect of export on the economic growth empirically by using the co-integration theory,pointing that there is a long and dynamic relationship between the two aspects.The quantitative analysis shows that both direct pull degree and contribution rate are low.Besides macro-environment,the poor competitive advantage of textiles and clothing industry also plays an important role.This paper can bring an intuitionistic and clear knowledge about the contribution of China's textiles and clothing export to economic growth and will supply references to the further study on the development of China's textiles and clothing industry in the quota-free era.
