Abstract:
Most radial turbines have a peak efficiency at around U/Cis (velocity ratio or jet speed ratio) of 0.7. It is a well-known fact that it is beneficial for radial turbocharger turbines to have a higher efficiency at low U/Cis region, since the pulsating engine exhaust gas at low U/Cis region (with high pressure and temperature) carries more energy compared to that at high U/Cis region (with low pressure and temperature). The improvement of Total to Static efficiency at low U/Cis region will help the turbine extract more energy from the exhaust gas and thereby increase the turbine cycle-averaged Total to Static efficiency. In the past there has been some attempts to move the peak U/Cis to lower values by using conventional or direct design approach on mixed flow impellers. But this approach usually results in reduction of stage performance. In this paper, a methodology is presented to control and move the radial turbine peak efficiency U/Cis to lower values by using a 3D inverse design method. The stage performance is measured by using steady CFD analysis. Furthermore detailed stress and vibration analysis are presented on the mechanical performance of the new design. Keywords:

Vehicle turbocharger turbines usually operate under pulsating inlet conditions, and the unsteady flow performance, which departs substantially from that at steady flow conditions, can make benefits for turbine design and engine match. The development of some aspects in this fleld, which include turbine dynamometry, experiments and prediction of turbine unsteady flow performance, are summarized in this paper.

The matching performance with the diesel engine and the reliability of ZN310A4 and ZN285A turbochargers are presented. Many kinds of effective measures are taken to improve the reliability of turbochargers. Two kinds of new products,ZN315A1 and ZN315B,are presented. The highest supercharging ratios of the two kinds of new turbochargers are all 4 3.They are suitable for 16V240ZJB、C、D and 12V280ZJ diesel engines. The platform test performance of ZN350A turbocharger developed for matching 16V280ZJB diesel engine is described. The latest result,ZN340 turbocharger with the highest supercharging ratio 5,is also promoted.

The fuel consumption,power,emission,air/fuel ratio as well as the pressure and temperature of intake and exhaust gas are measured and analyzed during the matching test of a diesel engine with two turbochargers. The diesel engine is of 6(cylinders),in line,water-cooled,turbocharging with intercooler, and direct injection engine for vehicle. The turbochargers have by-pass valves. When the by-pass valve opens earlier, the air quantity is greater in low engine speed and little smaller in high engine speed, the fuel consumption is lower and the power output higher in low engine speed, the fuel consumption and the power output are almost the same in high engine speed. This type turbocharger can meet the demands when matching diesel engines for vehicle.

Charging system is used to increase the charge density. Supercharging system suffers from fuel consumption penalty because of compressor powered by engine output. Turbocharging system uses wasted exhaust energy that means compressor powered by exhaust turbine but has a turbo lag problem. The electrically assisted turbocharger which can eliminate turbo lag problem and fuel consumption penalty is the topic of this paper. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of electrically assisted turbocharger on diesel engine performance parameters. The AVL Boost software program was used to simulate the electrically assisted turbocharged diesel engine. Simulations results showed that electrically assisted turbocharger increases low end torque and improves fuel economy.

Turbine experiment on the mixed flow turbine for H1F turbocharger, which is currently used in J6110Z diesel engine, was undertaken. The experimental results were analyzed and compared with that of currently used radial turbine. It can be seen from the mass flow character comparison that since it has combined flow character of the radial and axial flow turbine, the mixed flow turbine has larger flow capacity than relevant radial turbine, which will benefit the acceleration character for turbocharged diesel engine. The efficiency experimental result also shows that the mixed flow turbine can obtain higher maximum efficiency at lower velocity ratio u/c 0,which will benefit the low speed character for turbocharged diesel engine.
