Objective:To explore the treatment method for skeletal malocclusion and provide references for clinic.Methods:Twenty-five patients with skeletal malocclusion were treated with orthodontic and orthognathic means. The first step, the therapeutic schedules were formulated. The compensation of teeth was removed for adjusting dentural defect curve, then orthognathic surgery was performed for all cases. Finally the dentitions were adjusted by orthodontic treatment for 2 months. Results:The facial contour of 25 cases were significantly improved, and occludingrelation was good. The angles of SNB and ANB were greatly changed, and there was significant difference before and after the treatment(P0.05 and P0.01).Conclusions:Combination of orthodontic and orthognathic treatment is a good clinical method for skeletal malocclusion.

To investigate the smile esthetics variables in three malocclusion classifications of angle to find out if the final smile esthetics was correlated with the initial types of malocclusion. This cross-sectional study was performed on 90 adult patients (18-28 years old) with three classes of malocclusion (n = 30 for each class), who were just treated by an orthodontist based on standard edgewise (0.018 inch). A standardized smile mesh analysis was used to evaluate seven smile characteristics.Orthodontic treatment improved all the smile characteristics in the three groups. All groups showed an increase in smile width, smile index, and vertical indices; while, the transverse indices decreased. Significant increase was observed in four smile measurements in patients with Class II malocclusion. Comparing the smile characteristic changes among the three groups revealed that the changes induced by orthodontic treatment were significantly higher in patients with Class II malocclusion. The smile esthetics in all the three types of malocclusion benefited from the orthodontic treatment; however, the changes were more significant in Class II malocclusions. None of the three malocclusion types showed significant difference between the pre- and post-treatment smile characteristics.

Objective To study the mechanism and applicability of class ionomer cement occlusal pad of posterior teeth combined with fixed appliance in treatment of class Ⅱ division 2 malocclusions. Methods 30 cases of Angle class Ⅱ division 2 malocclusion were selected.15 patients were treated with class ionomer cement occlusal pad combined with fixed appliance and 15 cases were as controls.Their cephalometry radiographs were measured and analyzed before and after treatment. Results In both of groups,Anterior and posterior facial height(S-Go,N-Me,ANS-Me) were increased.Labial incline in upper and lower incisors(U1-SN,L1-MP) and interincisa angle(U1-L1) were decreased. The posterior teeth(U6-PP,L6-MP) were extruded and the upper incisors(U1-PP)were intruded. The overbite was decreased.Compared the two groups,in addition to U1/SN,L1/MP and U1/L1,the other indexes were all no statistical variances. Conclusion Class ionomer cement occlusal pad of posterior teeth with fixed appliance can be used effectively for class Ⅱ division 2 malocclusion.

To investigate the discrepancy between ICP and MCP caused by orthodontic treatment. to evaluate the treatment effect of the malocclusion with later orthodontic treatment.Nineteen cases were selected and treated with preadjusted appliance and combination headgear appliance.Pre- and post- treatment celphalometric radiographs were analyzed.Discrepancy between ICP and MCP may be resulted from improper design and operation of orthodontists and poor cooperation of patients; By preadjusted appliance and combination headgear appliance, upper dental arch was moved distally; Molar relationship was changed into Class I by bodily movement; A harmonization between ICP and MCP was rehabilitated. The discrepancy between ICP and MCP should be minded; Preadjusted appliance and combination headgear appliance were effective in the correction of the discrepancy between ICP and MCP.

Objective To study and observe the effect of Herbst appliance in the treatment of patients with skeletalⅡ II malocclusion. Methods 48 patients with skeletal classⅡ malocclusion in our hospital from June 2011 to July 2012 were selected as research object, and they were randomly divided into control group(Activator appliance group)24cases and observation group(Herbst appliance group)24cases,then the cephalometric indexes and periodontal health related indexes of two groups before and after the treatment were compared. Results The cephalometric indexes of observation group after the treatment were all better than those of control group and those before the treatment, the periodontal health related indexes including plaque index, gingival index and bleeding index at different times after the treatment were all better than those of control group too(all P0.05),there were all significant differences. Conclusion The effect of Herbst appliance in the treatment of patients with skeletal classⅡ malocclusion is better, and the clinical effect is better,at the same time the bad influence for periodontal health is smaller.

Objective To investigate the incidence of Bolton ratios in different malocclusion groups. Method The mesiodistal width of six anterior teeth and twelve teeth size were assessed in 325 patients who were selected randomly. These dental casts were divided into three groups according to angle classification .Bolton ratios and the incidence of Bolton tooth size discrepancies were calculated and statistical differences were estimated. Result Bolton anterior and overall ratios of Class Ⅲ and Class Ⅰ were more than that of Class Ⅱ respectively. While Bolton anterior and overall tooth size discrepancies showed Class Ⅰ ClassⅡClass Ⅲ(P0.05). Conclusion Significant difference can be found in both Bolton index and the incidence of Bolton tooth size discrepancies in different malocclusion groups. It suggests that the Bolton analysis should be carried out before treatment.

ABSTRACT Introduction Malocclusion plays an important role in the development of periodontitis. Thus, by treating malocclusion, a good gingival health can be achieved. This study was conducted to establish the correlation between orthodontic tooth movement and periodontitis. Materials and methods This is a retrospective study conducted on 220 patients who underwent orthodontic treatment for malocclusion. They were divided into two groups: Group I patients were treated with fixed orthodontics, while group II patients received myofunctional appliances. Results The value for plaque, gingival recession, and tooth mobility significantly increased in group I patients. However, the difference was statistically nonsignificant in group II patients. Conclusion The authors concluded that there is correlation between malocclusion and periodontitis. Malocclusion leads to periodontitis. Clinical significance Malocclusion is the main reason for the development of poor periodontal health. Combined effort has to be played by both periodontist and orthodontist for the treatment of various orthodontic-periodontal problems. In this second of two articles, the role of occlusion and malocclusion is assessed with respect to orthodontics and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Some have suggested that malocclusion may cause TMD, or that by introducing a form of malocclusion, orthodontic treatment could be iatrogenic. Pertinent evidence relating to these issues will be assessed.
