Abstract:
Stocks and flows (SF) are essential to every-day judgments: debt changes with rates of incomes and expenses, and body weight with calories consumed and energy expended. Research suggests that individuals with strong mathematical skills have a poor understanding of SF. However, past research used homogeneous participant samples and the relationship between mathematical knowledge and performance in SF tasks was not tested. In two studies involving different populations from China and the U.S.A, we find that individuals with better general mathematical knowledge tend to be more accurate in SF tasks. We find that most participants who make mistakes follow an erroneous correlation heuristic; however, we also find that the use of this heuristic is not related to mathematical knowledge. Our results open the door to new research questions, including the type of mathematical knowledge needed and the relationship of mathematical knowledge and cognitive processes that people need for solving SF tasks. Two aspects of young children's cognitive representations of peer relationships–peer affiliative motivation and feelings and beliefs about the self and peers–were assessed among a sample of 75 children (37 girls), who ranged in age from 32 to 76 months (M = 58.2 months). Measures of three aspects of discrete social cognition, encoding of social cues, hostile attributions and social strategy generation were also obtained and the children's teachers provided ratings of the children's behavior with peers. Both measures of cognitive representations were significantly associated with the quality of social strategy generation, but not the other measures of discrete social cognition. Measures of cognitive representations were also associated with ratings of competent, prosocial, withdrawn and aggressive behavior. Findings support the hypothesis that social strategy generation mediates associations between both measures of cognitive representations and ratings of children's withdrawn behavior, but mediational models predicting other aspects of behavior were not supported.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the causal relationship between meta-cognitive beliefs about thought suppression and intrusive thoughts. We conducted structural equation modeling using a cross-lagged effect model and a synchronous effect model. Results revealed that the Paradoxical Effect subscale score synchronously increased the frequency of intrusive thoughts. On the other hand, the frequency of intrusive thoughts did not affect the degree of confidence in meta-cognitive beliefs. These results demonstrate a causal relationship between meta-cognitive beliefs about thought suppression and intrusive thoughts. The cognitive processes underlying this causal relationship and future directions of research about thought suppression are discussed.

Research has demonstrated that some individuals possess attitudes that are highly consistent with both their feelings and beliefs, whereas other individuals possess attitudes that are less consistent with these sources of information (Haddock & Huskinson, 2004). The current research investigated whether individuals with strongly versus weakly structured attitudes differ in the accessibility of their affective and cognitive responses. In two experiments, participants provided timed affective and cognitive judgments toward different attitude objects. Overall, individuals with highly structured attitudes provided faster affective and cognitive attitudinal responses. Affective responses were also made more quickly than cognitive responses. Two additional experiments ruled out the possibility of a generalized response latency advantage for individuals with highly structured attitudes. The results speak to the importance of considering individual differences in how people organize their attitudes, as well as the distinction between the affective and cognitive components of attitude.

Privacy has been identified as a vital requirement in designing and implementing Data Mining (DM) systems.This motivated Privacy Preservation in Data Mining (PPDM) as a rising field of research and various approaches are being introduced by the researchers.One of the approaches is a sanitization process, that transforms the source database into a modified one that the adversaries cannot extract the sensitive patterns from.This study address this concept and proposes an effective heuristic-based algorithm which is aimed at minimizing the number of removal of items in the source database possibly with no hiding failure.

This project proposes to eliminate homogeneous cluster setup in a parallel data processing environment.A homogeneous cluster setup supports static nature of processing which is a huge disadvantage for optimising the response time towards clients.Parallel data processing is performed more often in today's internet and it is very important for the server to deliver the services to its client in optimal time.In order to avail utmost client satisfaction, the server needs to eliminate homogeneous cluster setup that is encountered usually in parallel data processing.The homogeneous cluster setup is static in nature and dynamic allocation of resources is not possible in this kind of environment.The project will also make sure that the user gets its entire requirement fulfilled in optimal time.This will improve the overall resource utilization and, consequently, reduce the processing cost.
