What does your neighbourhood say about you? A study of life expectancy in 1.3 million Swiss neighbourhoods

Abstract:
Switzerland had the highest life expectancy at 82.8 years among the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries in 2011. Geographical variation of life expectancy and its relation to the socioeconomic position of neighbourhoods are, however, not well understood.We analysed the Swiss National Cohort, which linked the 2000 census with mortality records 2000-2008 to estimate life expectancy across neighbourhoods. A neighbourhood index of socioeconomic position (SEP) based on the median rent, education and occupation of household heads and crowding was calculated for 1.3 million overlapping neighbourhoods of 50 households. We used skew-normal regression models, including the index and additionally marital status, education, nationality, religion and occupation to calculate crude and adjusted estimates of life expectancy at age 30 years.Based on over 4.5 million individuals and over 400,000 deaths, estimates of life expectancy at age 30 in neighbourhoods ranged from 46.9 to 54.2 years in men and from 53.5 to 57.2 years in women. The correlation between life expectancy and neighbourhood SEP was strong (r=0.95 in men and r=0.94 women, both p values <0.0001). In a comparison of the lowest with the highest percentile of neighbourhood SEP, the crude difference in life expectancy from skew-normal regression was 4.5 years in men and 2.5 years in women. The corresponding adjusted differences were 2.8 and 1.9 years, respectively (all p values <0.0001).Although life expectancy is high in Switzerland, there is substantial geographical variation and life expectancy is strongly associated with the social standing of neighbourhoods.Keywords:

Abstract A brief survey of censuses previously taken in Northern Nigeria makes clear by comparison the importance of the 1952 Census in the acquisition of demographic data. Some of the problems of organising and conducting the census are considered. The analysis of the census results pays special attention to the pattern of population density but consideration is also given to age and sex structure, occupations, tribal data, literacy and religions. Shortcomings and omissions in the census, particularly the absence of any information on migration, are noted. The conclusion stresses the importance of the 1952 Census as a basis for future demographic studies ; the evidence for an increasing population but the absence of vital statistics to explain this ; the need for much further detailed analysis to be undertaken of the data in the 1952 Census.

In the near future, the questionnaire for the 1980 census of the U.S. population will be locked up until it is time to administer the twentieth decenial census of the United States. At that time the Census Bureau will once more distribute and administer this document aimed at counting the over two hundred million inhabitants of the United States of America. In this bicentennial year it is reasonable to reflect on the origin of the census as well as some important technological advances that have accompanied the processing of this data. Perhaps from an historical view of the U.S. census, we may gain some insight into how this data may be used to shape our future and how we as computer professionals might participate in this shaping.

The census in 2000 is the first census in China at the turn of the century, so it is important and crucial. The paper puts emphasis on the exploitation, utilization and issue of the data derived from the census and tLhe way of the standardizing and managing of the data. The issuing of the census data, especially the issuing of important data about conditions of the country, should be standardized and managed by National Statistics Bureau.

The census of population has a long tradition, going back to the days of antiquity. Though the process was not always known as a "census," its first purpose was to supply a count of the people. Gradually, the purpose of the population census has been modified to meet the changing needs of society. Thus, the modern census has no administrative uses similar to those of the Roman census of 2000 years ago.
