Abstract Bioethics is an interdisciplinary inquiry into ethical issues in the life sciences and biomedicine. The extent to which medical ethics should be seen as central to bioethics has been debated, but this is now the dominant view. The core aims and features of bioethics are that it involves bringing moral reason to bear, via three central activities—clinical consultation, bioethics and public policy and scholarly bioethics ethics—on morally pressing issues. This characterization of bioethics is one that includes an important spectrum from more philosophical bioethics to more empirical bioethics, and also includes those who favour a more missionary perspective.

ABSTRACT Bioethics is the formal study of ethical judgments concerning the advances and applications of biology, medicine and related technologies. In a time of unprecedented biomedical advances, it is critical to integrate bioethical frameworks more fully into biomedical research to align these scientific advances with their intended societal needs. In this Perspective, we describe some motivations and frameworks for cross-disciplinary bioethical training for biomedical researchers, and discuss how actively considering bioethics in research and study design could maximize biomedical researchers' intended impacts in society.

Abstract It is nearly two decades now since the publication of G odfrey T angwa's article, ‘Bioethics: A frican Perspective’, without a critical review. His article is important because sequel to its publication in Bioethics, the idea of ‘ A frican bioethics’ started gaining some attention in the international bioethics literature. This paper breaks this relative silence by critically examining T angwa's claim on the existence of A frican bioethics. Employing conceptual and critical methods, this paper argues that T angwa's account of A frican bioethics has some conceptual, methodic and substantive difficulties, which altogether do not justify the idea of A frican bioethics, at least for now. Contra T angwa, this article establishes that while A frican bioethics remains a future possibility, it is more cogent that current efforts in the name of ‘ A frican bioethics’ be primarily re‐intensified towards ‘Healthcare ethics in A frica’.

This paper aims at describing the circumstances of the birth of Bioethics. In the first section, the paper points out some historical data supporting the widely diffused opinion according to which Bioethics started in the USA at the beginning of the '70s. In the second section, one of the most important factors in the birth of Bioethics is discussed: namely, the changes in medical enterprise and health care ethics. In the third section the impact of Bioethics on clinical medicine at the bedside is discusses, and, in the last section, one of the most important practical application of bioethical reflection is presented: the creation of Hospital Ethics Committees.

The book Reflections on Bioethics is an effort that brings together works grouped into five sections: "Bioethics and Health", "Bioethics and Education", "Bioethics and Technology", "Bioethics in the Use of Experimental Animals",and "Selected Topics of Bioethics". In each of these sections, the fundamental concepts of bioethics and their relationship with each of these branches of knowledge are covered. The purpose is to give the reader a specific document of topics, it is not intended to be a treaty because the study of any of the five sections is very broad. However, this is an effort that manages to combine in interdisciplinary subjects that are fundamental for professionals of all fields of knowledge.
