Abstract:
This paper deals with the design of impulse noise resistant receivers for providing telephony-over-cable (ToC) services over hybrid fiber coax (HFC) networks. We first discuss the overall scenario of ToC services and the impulse noise problems faced by such systems in HFC networks. We then briefly describe the time-frequency characteristics of impulse interference and derive the probability of error for binary and quadrature PSK signalling schemes for impulse noise afflicted channels. In light of the constraints imposed by the ToC problem, the performance of the proposed solution strategies which make use of non-linear processing and channel coding, is evaluated in detail along with simulation results.Keywords:

This paper describes a methodology for use in dimensioning the power requirements for the provision of telephony over coaxial cable networks. A model describing the distributed power system elements in a coax network is presented. Guidelines are given for cost optimisation of the coax power network. An example of dimensioning the power for telephony on a typical coax network for a given grade-of-service is also presented.

A new and potentially economic method has been identified to serve small business customers (say less than 20 lines) and eventually the residential market via an all-fiber access network. The target is to provide a fiber network justified solely on the basis of known services such as telephony while laying down a fiber infrastructure that can support a wide range of new services from telemetry to CATV and b-ISDN. The solution lies in sharing a single-mode feeder fiber from the exchange over several customers premises using a number of passive optical splitters in the street network. Time-division multiple access is used initially on one wavelength to support telephone while other wavelengths will be used later to support future service upgrade including broadband.< >

Broadband communications are here today. The most important discussion revolves around the architecture of the distribution network. The technologies based on conventional telephone architectures utilize dedicated bandwidth to each individual phone, thus making addition of new phone lines expensive. Most installed cable systems today utilize broadcast type networks to allow customers to tap into the information flow. FPN has patented technology which utilizes cable plants enhanced for two-way communications. Each customer taps on to the cable just like a TV or set top converter, taking advantage of a two-way telephone connection on the same plant which provides TV distribution.

Telco, cable, satellite, and electric-utility industries are racing to bring new services to the home, using fiber, coax, microwaves, or telephone lines delivering high-speed Internet access, telephony, and digital TV and audio. We make two important observations: point-of-entry or other new interfaces are needed in all cases, and the performance of existing in-home wiring is frequently inadequate.

An integrated distribution system is proposed that provides switched video, data, and telephony on a single analog broadband facility, using the concept of demand assignment. A reduced capability broad-band distribution system, based on the same principles and using coaxial cable, can be implemented in the near term to provide only the switched video and interactive data capabilities. Cost estimates are presented for this reduced capability system that are almost an order of magnitude lower than was previously thought possible for low-usage receive-only switched video service. It is expected that telephony con be added economically to this reduced capability system, as digital switching of telephony becomes practical. A brief discussion of the implications of this system approach for optical fiber systems is also given.

This paper discusses the practical implementation of IP telephony over a cable TV network, in the most cost efficient manner. Another goal is to show that a single "hybrid" IP solution is suitable for commercial cable TV operators who wish to combine telephony infrastructure with lines switching in their networks. This solution will enable the use of traditional transmission protocols using lines switching, while the section between a subscriber and the base station will support a full suite of IP applications.

Concentration in the telephony network has traditionally been done at the local digital switch and seldom done in the distribution portion of the network. With the availability of integrated digital loop carrier systems conforming to TR- 303 in the U.S. and V5.2 internationally, service providers have the choice of concentrating at the switch or in the distribution network. Concentration in the distribution portion of the network is particularly attractive in a hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network because it tends to drive the HFC telephony common equipment cost lower. This paper compares the different options and analyzes the benefits of concentration in the distribution.

There has been renewed interest in providing data and telephony services over the hybrid-coaxial network used to provide cable television services. We provide a summary of the current status of these efforts and the implications for powering such networks. In particular, changes in powering needed to provide primary-line cable telephony services are discussed.
