Abstract:
Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations have led to the discovery of the optical counterpart of the radio jet of PKS 2201+044 and to a detailed analysis of the optical jets of PKS 0521-365 and 3C 371. At HST spatial resolution these jets are well resolved, displaying knotty morphologies. When compared with radio maps of appropriate resolution, a clear one-to-one correspondence between optical and radio structures is found, showing that all detected optical structures are indeed related to the radio synchrotron emission. Photometry of the brightest knots shows that the radio-to-optical spectral index and the derived intensity of the equipartition magnetic field are approximately constant along the jet. Thus, present observations suggest that the electron energy distribution does not change significantly all along the jet. Keywords:

Abstract The multiple object and multiple frame (MOMF) CCD photometry package, that combines the advantages of aperture and PSF photometry is described. Results from comparisons with other programs are given; no other photometry package was found to give better results than MOMF.

Abstract I comment on some of the steps required to convert raw instrumental magnitudes, derived by profile-fitting or synthetic-aperture photometry from CCD images, to final calibrated photometry on a standard system. The status of the DAO program to obtain homogeneous BV photometry for star clusters and nearby galaxies will also be discussed.

The design considerations and operation features of DoPHOT, a point spread function fitting (PSF) photometry program, are described. Some relevant details of the PSF fitting are discussed. The quality of the photometry returned by DoPHOT is assessed via reductions of an 'artificial' globular cluster generated from a list with well known magnitudes and colors. Results from comparative tests between DoPHOT and DAOPHOT using this synthetic cluster and real data are also described.

Systematic differences in the UBVRI photometry of SN 1987A exist between the published photometry from CTIO and SAAO. The largest differences occur in the I band where the SAAO photometry is up to 0.4 magnitude brighter than the CTIO photometry. We have measured the filter/phototube response of the CTIO system and have synthesized VRI photometry from the CCD spectrophotometry of SN 1987A obtained at CTIO. The differences between the synthesized and photoelectric photometry for both the CTIO and SAAO natural systems are less than 0.05 magnitude. This confirms our previous suggestion that the nonstellar nature of the supernova spectrum can give rise to large systematic errors in photometry obtained at different sites. The comparison of the light curves of any two supernovae can be in error by a similar amount due to the different natural photometric systems.

Abstract We have obtained optical spectra and IR photometry in an attempt to determine the orbital parameters of the Aql X-1 system. Spectra from the MMT in October 1995 appear to detect the secondary, but are not sufficient to measure the mass function. IR photometry in and out of mini-outburst find K ~ 15.4, and may indicate that the disk contributionat K is modest during the mini-outburst.

This Technical Note gives guidance on the use of terms and units in photometry, particularly in relation to terms and units applicable for mesopic photometry. It can be used in conjunction with CIE 191:2010 Recommended System for Mesopic Photometry based on Visual Performance, which gives details of the method that should be used to calculate mesopic quantities and is fully compliant with the requirements of the SI system and the principles governing photometry, as published by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM).
