    Abstract:
A novel method for improving the precision of spectral shearing interferometry by using multiple shears is presented. Spectral shearing interferometry is a class of techniques which includes SPIDER, 2DSI and SPIRIT, in which the unknown pulse is interfered with a spectrally shifted replica. The pulse duration is limited by the inverse of the spectral shear and the spectrometer resolution. However, decreasing the spectral shear degrades the reconstructed phase signal-to-noise ratio because the reconstruction algorithm accumulates random phase noise at every sampling point. Here, this problem is solved by using multiple shears and combining the information in an optimal fashion. Intuitively, this algorithm resolves fine spectral features using a small shear measurement whilst using the finite differences from a large shear measurement to correct the accumulated error. This dramatically improves the precision of the retrieval in the presence of detector shot noise.

A plate shearing interferometer can be used for measurement of the optical aspherical surfaces. Being common path this kind of interferometer is quite stable. The use of a plate shearing interferometer for fringe scanning interferometry is discussed. The phase shifting is provided by a new technique presented in this paper. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that this technique can be used for real time wavefront-aberration detection with greater pricision.

A new type of interferometer, a differential rotationally shearing interferometer, differs from the traditional rotationally shearing interferometer in that the angle of rotation is infinitesimal or, at least, very small. A differential rotationally shearing interferometer may be used for the detection of wavefront asymmetry even when its asymmetry is very small. We present an implementation concept for the differential rotationally shearing interferometer, based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer. One of the important advantages of the new interferometer is that the polarization problems do not arise do the small angle of rotation between the two wavefronts.

Abstract We present here a self-referencing dual-field cyclic shearing interferometer for collimation testing. To generate the two fields, one of the two mirrors of a cyclic shearing interferometer is replaced by a double mirror. Ray tracing is carried out to determine conditions for obtaining fringe patterns suitable for self-referencing. Actual fringe patterns obtained in a self-referencing cyclic shearing interferometer are shown and the setting sensitivity of the interferometer is determined.

A cyclic interferometer can be used for both lateral and radial shearing. Being common-path this interferometer is quite stable. The use of a cyclic shear interferometer for phase shifting interferometry is discussed. The phase shifting is provided here by polarization techniques. Some useful cyclic phase shifting interferometer arrangements are discussed, and the working of a polarization phase shifting cyclic shear interferometer is demonstrated.

A brief review of lateral- and radial-shearing interferometry is presented together with a thorough discussion of the theory of rotational-shearing interferometry. A rotational-shearing interferometer is described based on the Jamin principle that was built by the authors while at the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. Graphs and photographs of the interference patterns of the lenses and a lightweight mirror that were tested with this interferometer are presented and discussed. Finally, the effect of the size of the source on the degree of coherence of the interference pattern is considered.
