Abstract:
Four wild berry species, Amelanchier alnifolia, Viburnum trilobum, Prunus virginiana, and Shepherdia argentea, all integral to the traditional subsistence diet of Native American tribal communities, were evaluated to elucidate phytochemical composition and bioactive properties related to performance and human health. Biological activity was screened using a range of bioassays that assessed the potential for these little-known dietary berries to affect diabetic microvascular complications, hyperglycemia, pro-inflammatory gene expression, and metabolic syndrome symptoms. Nonpolar constituents from berries, including carotenoids, were potent inhibitors of aldose reductase (an enzyme involved in the etiology of diabetic microvascular complications), whereas the polar constituents, mainly phenolic acids, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidins, were hypoglycemic agents and strong inhibitors of IL-1beta and COX-2 gene expression. Berry samples also showed the ability to modulate lipid metabolism and energy expenditure in a manner consistent with improving metabolic syndrome. The results demonstrate that these berries traditionally consumed by tribal cultures contain a rich array of phytochemicals that have the capacity to promote health and protect against chronic diseases, such as diabetes. Keywords:

This study aims to obtain data on the phytochemical content of the methanol extract of Baringtonia asiatica. Obtain data on the phytochemical content of the B. asiatica clorform extract. This research was carried out in the Biology laboratory and Chemistry Laboratory, State University of Manado. The study consisted of extraction and phytochemical analysis using the Harborne method, the results showed that from the extraction process the highest yield was obtained in extracts with n-hexane solvent, then chloroform and methanol. The results of phytochemical analysis show that saponins are the phytochemical group with the strongest intensity found compared to other phytochemical groups. Furthermore, flavonoids were found in high intensity also in the analyzed samples.

The present investigation elucidates the ethnomedicinal importance of nine different medicinal plants such as Holarrhena antidysenterica. (Roth), Murraya koenigii (L.) Spreng, Thysanolaena maxima (Roxb.) Kuntze, Flemingia strobilifera (L.) W.T. Aiton, Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels, Helicteres isora (L.), Manilkara zapota (L.) P. Royen., Plumbago zeylanica (L.), Bombax ceiba (L.) used for treatment of diarrhea and dysentery by the Paraja tribe of Koraput district of Odisha, India. A high degree of informant consensus for each species was observed. The aqueous extract of different plant samples were used for the phytochemical analysis to find out the phytochemical constituents in the plants. Phytochemical analysis of these plants revealed that some plants are promising sources of several chemical constituents like alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols and antioxidants with free radical scavenging activity in varying proportions and possess anti-diarrhoeal activity. The study suggests that further work should be carried out to elucidate the possible mechanism of action of these extracts against diarrhea and dysentery.

HLA-B-associated transcript 3 (BAT3) was originally identified as one of the genes located within human major histocompatibility complex. It encodes a large proline-rich protein with unknown function. In this study, we found that a fragment of the BAT3 gene product interacts with a candidate tumor suppressor, DAN, in the yeast-based two-hybrid system. We cloned the full-length rat BAT3 cDNA from a fibroblast 3Y1 cDNA library. Our sequence analysis has demonstrated that rat BAT3 cDNA is 3617 nucleotides in length and encodes a full-length BAT3 (1098 amino acids) with an estimated molecular mass of 114,801 daltons, which displays an 87.4% identity with human BAT3. The deletion experiment revealed that the N-terminal region (amino acid residues 1-80) of DAN was required for the interaction with BAT3. Green fluorescent protein-tagged BAT3 was largely localized in the cytoplasm of COS cells. Northern hybridization showed that BAT3 mRNA was expressed in all the adult rat tissues examined but predominantly in testis. In addition, the level of BAT3 mRNA expression was more downregulated in some of the transformed cells, including v-mos- and v-Ha-ras-transformed 3Y1 cells, than in the parental cells.

5 Abstract: Phytochemical screening tests were performed first before bulk extractions. Phytochemical screening resulted in the isolation of new and novel compounds proved to be a leading candidate to fight diseases including cancer. Aerial parts of E prostrate, E. milii, E. hirta and E. helioscopia were used for phytochemical screening for the presence of different classes of secondary metabolites. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of terpenoids, flavonoides and tannins which are given in Table (2-5). The IR spectroscopy of the crude extracts indicated the presence of OH, CH stretching saturated, C=O, C=C, NO C-N, Ar-O, C-O-, R-O-, 2, C-Cl Stretching respectively.
