Salt hydrate phase change materials used for thermal storage in space heating and cooling applications have low material costs, but high packaging costs. A more economic installed storage may be possible with medium priced, high latent heat. Latent heat storage is one of the most efficient ways of storing thermal energy. Unlike the sensible heat storage method, the latent heat storage method provides much higher storage density, with a smaller temperature difference between storing and releasing heat. This paper work on latent heat storage and provides an insight to recent efforts to develop new classes of phase change materials (PCMs) for
use in energy storage. There are large numbers of phase change materials that melt and solidify at a wide range of temperatures, making them attractive in a number of applications. Hydrated salts have larger energy storage density and higher thermal conductivity but experience super cooling and phase segregation, and hence, their application requires the use of some nucleating and thickening agents. Sodium carb-onate, sodium phosphate and sodium sulfate tested as phase change material by crystallization in this work.

To match the temperature range of central heating systems,several types of commercial grade paraffin with melting points have been investigated as the candidate phase change material(PCM).And the thermal behavior of the paraffin was tested.According to the phase change temperature difference and heat of fusion,the paraffin with the melting point at 87℃,latent heat of 203.9J/g,phase change temperature range of 80-90℃ was selected as the best phase change material.Paraffin emulsions were prepared by mixing non-ionic surfactants and co-surfactants.Thermal physical properties of these paraffin emulsions such as phase transition temperature and latent heat were tested.Because paraffin emulsions can store their latent heat during phase change process in the temperature range of 80-90℃,their heat storage density their and heat carrier density are higher than water.Based on that,paraffin emulsions are suitable for latent heat transportation.

In this paper, Ti 50Ni 40Cu 10(at.%) alloy was prepared and the transformation latent heats and hysteresis under different heat treatment processes and thermal cycling times were investigated systematically by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). It was found that the martensitic transformation latent heat(ΔH B2→19) and the reverse martensitic transformation latent heat(ΔH B19→B2) decreased significantly with increasing solution temperatures, and they decreased slightly with increasing annealing temperatures. The transformation hysteresis and reverse martensitic transformation temperatures decreased abruptly during the initial thermal cycling process and then remained constant with further thermal cycling times. The reverse transformation latent heats (ΔH B19→B2 and ΔH B19′→B2) increased with increasing thermal cycling times(n4),especially ΔH B19′→B19 increased about by 58%, while the martensitic transformation temperatures and martensitic transformation latent heat(ΔH B2→B19 remains almost constant whatever the thermal cycling times.

The latent heat thermal energy storage system using phase change material (PCM) is quite attractive, mainly due to their high energy storage density and their ability to provide heat in a narrow temperature range. A latent heat thermal energy storage unit is designed, which is installed conveniently and have a fast period of charge and discharge. The latent heat thermal energy storage unit is applied to a demonstration project in conjunction with solar collectors and tank. Results showed that the designed unit in this paper eases the large fluctuations of water temperature in tank and make the system work more stably. The latent heat thermal energy storage unit plays a significant role in project.
