Blood donation is the process of taking blood from someone voluntarily to be stored in a blood bank to be used for blood transfusions. This research aims to provide education to the public that blood donation has many benefits in the hope that there will be awareness of voluntary blood donation. The type of research carried out was descriptive qualitative research with data collection carried out by means of interviews, observation and documentation. The results of this research are that blood donation has a good effect on body health. Apart from that, the benefit of donating blood is that it helps reduce the risk of heart attacks and other heart problems and if blood donation is done regularly every three months, the body will produce new blood cells. The conclusion of this article is that blood donation has high effectiveness for health.

Screening blood donations for anti-HTLV-III with a modification to a commercially available test kit has so far been found satisfactory--the reagent cost is less than R1.00 a donation. Should all transfusion services adopt this method, South Africa's total blood donations could be tested at a cost of about R650 000, instead of R2.7 million or more, a year.

I appreciate very much the comments on our article published inJAMA, and I would like to clarify the following points. In the past, Saudis did not donate sufficient blood for local use because the government made it available, and not because donating blood reduces sexual prowess. After the occurrence of the first case of AIDS in Saudi Arabia, a comprehensive educational program was initiated to alert physicians and the Saudi public to the potential transmission of the AIDS virus through imported blood. Since then, blood imports have been completely stopped and all blood used in Saudi Arabia is now locally supplied by voluntary donors. Expatriates who donate blood are compensated, while Saudi citizens are not paid for blood donations. Since adoption of this program, we have not experienced any shortage in blood supplies.Blood donations

Donating blood is a vital way to help save lives. Along with helping save lives, there are a number of reasons why donating blood is important. Despite medical and technological advances, blood cannot be made, so donations are the only way we can give blood to those who need it. It has been estimated that blood is needed every 2 s. Realizing the importance of encouraging voluntary blood donations to ensure the continued supply of safe blood, every year June 14 is observed as World Blood Donor’s Day to mark the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner. Blood transfusion saves lives and improves.....

The King Khalid University Hospital (KKUH) Blood Bank suffers frequent shortages of blood components because it depends partly on involuntary blood donors, and is expending considerable effort to increase its pool of voluntary donors. The present study aimed to investigate the attitude of King Saud University (KSU) students towards blood donation to determine the factors that would increase voluntary blood donations at KKUH. A cross-sectional study was conducted at 6 colleges (n = 600) in KSU, Riyadh, between February and March 2012 using a self-administered questionnaire distributed to donors (n = 300) and non-donors (n = 300). All respondents were male. Ninety-eight percent of KSU students agreed that blood donation is important; 92% of non-donors believed that blood bank centers are in need of voluntary blood donations. Seventy-six percent of non-donors were opposed to importing blood, reflecting their opinion that blood should be available locally. The majority of the students did not consider fear or donation venue strong discouraging factors against blood donation and objected to monetary compensation, but would accept a token or gift. The present survey highlighted the need to invest in awareness and motivational campaigns on blood donation among university students so that current donors will continue donating and non-donors will be encouraged to begin donating. Addressing the issues raised by the non-donors will pave the way to their becoming regular blood donors. This will eventually facilitate the establishment of a blood donor system based on voluntary, non-remunerated donations.

Reticulocytes are young red blood cells that are not nucleated and originate from the normoblast maturation process in the bone marrow. The blood donor activity will affect the blood volume, it will cause the amount of reticulocytes to rise because the bone marrow produces new cells. Reticulocyte microscopic method by making dry preparations with the principle of supravital staining. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in reticulocyte counts before and after blood donation using paired sample t test. The results of this study were obtained that the average number of reticulocytes before the donor was 1.4% and the number after the donor was 2.2%, so that the P value: 0,000, which means p <0.05, which means Ho is rejected. The conclusion in this study that there were significant differences between the number of reticulocytes before and after blood donation.

Blood donation is an activity where a person voluntarily gives blood which will later be stored in a blood bank for transfusion purposes for those in need. Generally, blood requirements are not proportional to the number of donors. Information on the importance of the danar donors is still unknown. This activity aims to help the Surabaya City Indonesian Red Cross meet and increase the blood stock needed in the city of Surabaya and to socialize all students of the Surabaya Adhi Tama Institute of Technology about the importance of blood donation. This blood donation activity is a collaboration between the Chemical Engineering Student Association and the Indonesian Red Cross Donor City of Surabaya. The technical implementation of this activity is divided into 4 stages, namely distribution of donor forms, donor registration, health checks, blood donors. This blood donation activity is supported not only by the chemical engineering community, but also by the faculty community, namely students and lecturers. The blood donation activity lasted for 1 day with 60 blood donor participants and it went well. The participants involved consisted of 52 students and 8 lecturers. Based on the health check, it was found that 40 participants did not meet the requirements to become blood donors and 20 people did, so they received 20 bags of blood.
