Abstract:
The network traffic data is interpreted differently by people in different sectors. This paper proposes a framework for hierarchically visualizing the network traffic data, and customizes a set of the classic approaches or algorithms to produce visualizations in different levels. Based on the framework, we developed a prototype system Hint Vis to support analyzing network traffic data in different levels by constructing layered semantic network traffic objects and producing hierarchical visualizations. The usability of Hint Vis is demonstrated by visualizing packets going through the gateway in a LAN. Depending on the hierarchical visualizations, analysts are able to semantically navigate in the network traffic data and concentrate on what they need.Keywords:

The structure and function of a traffic transport network are similar to these of a computer network. The former is used for vehicles to run, while the latter is used to transmit data packets. The problem of traffic flow congestion in a traffic network is also similar to that of packet congestion in a computer network. Up to now, there are a lot of researches about the problem of packet congestion control algorithm for a computer network, but while there is a relatively little study about the problem of traffic congestion for a traffic network from the point of whole network in current academia. In order to find a good way to control traffic congestion, learning from theory and technology on computer networks, we have made a comprehensive study about modeling and congestion control algorithm for a transportation network. Firstly, we set up a switching model for whole traffic network and put functions of congestion detection and controlling into switching nodes. Based on it, we have made a further study about issue of traffic congestion control and scheduling. By introducing PID control model into it, we design a new algorithm, which is called TPID. By this way, we have improved the performance and efficiency to design a traffic congestion control system for a traffic network.

Techniques of network status estimation and traffic prediction are required for network control and user applications in the contexts where a variety of traffic data sources are available. Due to the difficulty of estimating applications' network demands and the difficulty of predicting network load, however, the management of network resources has often been ignored. This paper presents a heuristic of network status classification that has been observed in various scale operational networks. The basic idea of the approach is that network traffic repeat cycles of congested states and that a variation of network latency is strongly correlated with the past history of the latency. We directly monitor network load by continually measuring end-to-end network latencies in real operational networks and classify network traffic status with respect to the stability and the burstiness of the latencies. The experimental results showed that the proposed method is capable of evaluating network traffic status and reflecting the related fluctuations.

A challenge in the traffic management of emerging networks is to describe, analyze and control their complex traffic flows in ways that can be applied in practice. Our approach to this problem starts with collection and analysis of high-resolution traffic traces from working networks; models that can accurately and adequately describe these complex flows are devised, which then lead to the development of appropriate and practical traffic management methods. This paper takes a close look at network traffic measurements based on our experiences analyzing a large number of traffic traces collected from a wide range of technologies including Ethernet, ISDN packet, CCS, Internet, frame relay and ATM. We give an overview of lessons learned regarding actual traffic patterns in various packet networks, discussing aggregate network traffic and individual connection traffic, and traffic characteristics found in various protocol layers such as user, link layer, and service; we point out various factors that can impact the observed traffic characteristics. We use real examples to discuss the impacts of equipment and protocol implementations on network traffic patterns.

Traffic management can improve QoS of the network, the exist well-known algorithm for the network traffic management has some problems in the sensitive degree and the network reliability, using queuing theory build up the basic M/M/1 model for the network traffic management, obtaining the network traffic forecasting ways and the stable congestion rate formula, combining the general network traffic monitor parameters, realizing the estimation and monition process for the network traffic rationally. By testing the algorithm, we know that queuing theory can optimize the network traffic, it’s convenient and simple for calculating and monitoring the network traffic properly.

As organization networks grow, it is essential that network administrators have knowledge of the different types of traffic traversing their networks and the methods of monitoring such traffic. Traffic monitoring and analysis is essential in order to troubleshoot and resolve issues as they occur in order not to bring the network to a total collapse. There are numerous tools and methods available for network traffic monitoring and analysis, no administrator can effectively carry out such activities without in-depth knowledge of the traffic on the network. The inefficient management of the network traffic may result into network collapse or degradation and these may negatively affect the network performance of the Corporate or University networks. This paper therefore, proposed a developed network topology and simulation to monitor the network performance. Therefore, achieving an effective management and controlling of the increase traffic flows in the network. The result obtained shows a better network performance in the bandwidth usage and utilization of the University network.

This paper studies the adaptive traffic congestion control of traffic network from the system-theoretic viewpoint. The time-dependent characteristics of traffic congestion length are described by a linear time-varying discrete dynamical system based on the traffic volume at each signalized intersection. An adaptive control system of the traffic congestion length in a traffic network using a decentralized control concept is proposed. The authors also propose two adaptive control algorithms for traffic congestion length control in a traffic network. One is a priority control algorithm, the other is a balance control algorithm.

Network traffic monitoring is a basic method of network security management.It introduces the techniques of network traffic monitoring,SNMP,RMON and RMON2,and the principles of distributed network analyzer.It compares and analyzes the methods of network traffic monitoring from the use of software and hardware,the measurement mechanism and the time of traffic monitoring.Use the real-time data collected and analyzed by network analyzer in the laboratory network,such as the data of frame traffic,bandwidth utilization and flow switch ports,statistical packet of protocol type distribution.During the experiment,increasing the network traffic,network managers can monitor visually and compare various periods of network traffic,they can also easily find network failure timely,reasonably use network resources,and securely manage network.
