The application of red mud in the remediation of heavy metals-polluted environment has raised great concerns. This application does make a breakthrough in the remediation of heavy metals-polluted environment, but brings about environmental risks at the same time.In the present studies on the application of red mud in the remediation of heavy metals-polluted environment, more attentions focus on the remediation effectiveness or remediation process, but few focuses on the deactivation mechanisms of heavy metals by red mud.The environmental risk assessment of red mud remediation is still at the beginning. This paper reviewed the research progress in the application of red mud in the remediation of heavy metals-polluted environment, and gave comments to the future studies on the application of red mud in the management of heavy metals pollution: 1) to further study the deactivation mechanisms of heavy metals by red mud,2) to approach the effective safety assessment means of red mud application, and 3) to integrate the red mud remediation and bio-remediation(plants or microorganisms) to remediate the heavy metals and organic compound pollution.

The stero-pollution from agriculture production is a very serious problem facing the sustainable agricultural development at home and aboard. The feasible way is to set up the ecotypic environmental remediation technology and methods within a shorter period of time. The bio-remediation has become an important part of environmental protection technology because it's a whole ecotypic course and has more evident advantages than others in restoring the environment. The bio-remediation includes microbial remediation, plant remediation and microbial-plant remediation. The definition and present state of stero-pollution in China, the characteristics and development situation of bio-remediation at home and abroad, and the prospect of application of bio-remediation are summarized in this paper.

ABSTRACT Remediation decisions for contaminated sediment sites are typically based on comparisons of in situ sediment concentrations to preliminary remediation goals (PRGs). Preliminary remediation goals are typically developed for protection of human health and the environment, with consideration of site‐specific factors that play an important role in determining the sediment concentrations that are consistent with the human health and environmental protection objectives. Remediation goals are selected from among the PRGs. Sediment remediation goals for 4 common contaminants (PCBs, PAHs, Pb, and Hg) at contaminated sediment sites throughout the United States were compiled to determine significant trends and evaluate causes of those trends. Remediation goals were compiled from Records of Decision (RODs) and 5‐year review reports for 77 contaminated sediment sites throughout the continental United States. Remediation goals were developed both as surface‐weighted average concentrations (SWACs) and action levels (i.e., not‐to‐exceed values). One or both may be used to define areas requiring remediation. Remediation goals based on SWACs are typically applied to bioaccumulative chemicals for human health and wildlife receptors, whereas action levels are typically used for chemicals that result in an acute toxicity to small home range, sediment‐dwelling biota. The findings from this review of remediation goals indicate that SWACs are an increasingly common approach for developing remediation goals. In addition, the findings from this review indicate that although remediation goals adopted for Pb have become more stringent over time, no trend is evident for PCBs, PAHs, and Hg. Remediation goals for PCBs, PAHs, and Hg vary among a number of factors, such as geography, habitat, human or ecological risks, and other local factors. A field experiment was carried out to survey the application of animal and plant combination remediation technology in local heavy metal contaminated soils. The results showed that, after 18months remediation, the content of Cd,Cu and Pb reduced by 92.3%,42.0% and 24.7%,respectively,which indicated that animal and plant combination remediation had better remediation effect than their simple added together, and the excess effect increased by 11.5%,7.2% and 5.0%,respectively.It's proved that animal and plant combination remediation technology was feasible for heavy metal contaminated soils and had strong application prospects.
