Abstract:
The cemented carbide YG30 and steel 1045 were welded with Co-Fe-C filling alloys with different carbon contents by the tungsten-inert-gas (TIG) arc welding. η phase formation at the welding joints was investigated through scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The results show that the average composition of η phase is W-25, Fe-22, Co-19, C-24 (mass, %), which is a kind of carbide enriched by Fe, W,and Co. The amount of η phase formed near the interface of YG30 and weld bead is related to the C content in the filling alloy. Namely the amount of η phase decreases with the increasing of the C content in the filling metal. When the C content reaches to 0.8 wt%, no η phase forms. The reason of which is that the added C reduces and/or restrains the resolving of the WC that locates at the interface, so that inhibit the W and C to form η phase with Fe and Co. The existence of large-size η phase near the interface is mainly attributed to the aggregation of small size η phase with the unsolved WC due to the stir of liquid metal, and then growing up.Keywords:

Surface contamination usually occurs during welding processing and it affects the welds quality largely. However, the formation of such contaminants has seldom been studied. Effort was made to study the contaminants caused by metal inert gas (MIG) welding and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding processes of aluminum alloy, respectively. SEM, FTIR and XPS analysis was carried out to investigate the microstructure as well as surface chemistry. These contaminants were found to be mainly consisting of Al 2 O 3 , MgO , carbide and chromium complexes. The difference of contaminants between MIG and TIG welds was further examined. In addition, method to minimize these contaminants was proposed.

Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding is a type of arc welding process which has its major application in the pressure equipment industries. The shielding gas used in TIG welding avoids the contamination of weld and it also enhances the weld characteristics. Normally, the inert gases are used as shielding gas. The aim of this study is to investigate the weld characteristics of alloy steels with pure argon and argon (80%) mixed with carbon dioxide as shielding gas. During the study, the weld penetration and the number of root passes were monitored. Then the weld characteristics were analyzed by mechanical testing of the welded specimen were examined. Finally, a thorough technical comparison is made for the different shielding gases in detail.

In this research, 6061-T6 aluminum alloys were welded using friction stir welding and tungsten inert as techniques in order to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties. FSW of aluminium alloys has showed better mechanical properties compared to the conventional welding, tungsten inert gas (TIG). FSW weldment did not show any pores at the nugget zone compared to fusion zone in TIG weldment which produced a lot of pores.

The aim of this thesis and project is to analyze the process of tungsten inert gas (TIG) and metal inert gas (MIG) welding and analyze the defects of welding. Metal inert gas (MIG) and Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding are the most popular gas-shielded arc welding processes used in many industrial fields. MIG welding is more highly efficient than TIG welding. This research has focused on welding defects with various types of welding joints for various metal alloys by using tungsten inert gas (TIG) and metal inert gas (MIG) welding processes. In this research, the mechanical properties also have been found such as yield stress, elastic stress, and breaking stress for both TIG and MIG welding processes.

Welding is one of the most popular methods of metal joining processes. The joining of the materials by welding provides a permanent joint of the components. The objective of this research is used to determine the influence of various welding parameters on the weld bead of AISI 316 welded joint. The result shows that speed is most influencing factor to have highest bend strength and current that is to be used while welding is the most influencing factor to get higher tensile strength. In this study, 316 stainless steel were joint using Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding process. Various current settings were used to obtain the optimum joint characteristics and minimize defects that will contribute to cost effective.

The whole region of tungsten inert gas (TIG) arc welding, namely, tungsten cathode, arc plasma and weld pool is treated in a unified numerical model. Calculations have been made for stationary TIG welding in an argon atmosphere at a current of 150 A. The two-dimensional distribution of temperature and the geometry of the weld penetration is predicted.
