    Abstract:
The enzymatic membrane bioreactor (EMB), which is a combination of a membrane separation process and an enzymatic reaction, is increasingly applied in food and agriculture fields. This article reviews the previous literatures of this topic, and particularly focuses on mathemaitc models which simulate the EMB system behavior and factors restricting EMB performances. The article consists of three parts. The first sector discusses mathematic models of EMB which are mostly derived from Michaelis-Menten equation, Fick’s diffusion law, chemical equilibrium and material balance, and affecting factors whose interactions are revealed by response surface methodology, in order to optimize the parameters of EMB. The second section summarizes the reaction characters of EMB. Finally, the future research areas of EMB are proposed.

Biofouling that formed in membrane bioreactor impacted the performance of membrane bioreactor. This study investigates the impact of biofouling in terms of the concentration of soluble microbial product on the characteristics and the fouling potential of lab scale membrane bioreactor. The performance of membrane bioreactor reduced significantly with reduction in the initial flux, and dramatic transformation in surface morphology and roughness occurred. The small size of residual organic substances further facilitates membrane fouling by pore blockage. It can be concluded that SMP influence fouling under certain condition of membrane bioreactor.

Accumulation of SMP in the membrane bioreactor(MBR) and its influence to bioreactor operation were studied. The result showed that the predominant constituent of SMP was carbonhydrate in the bioreactor during steady state.Furthermore, compared to the conventional activated sludge process(CAS),concentrations of SMP were higher in the MBR due to efficient interception performance of the membrane. It was found that the accumulation of SMP in the MBR had adverse effect on sludge MLVSS/MLSS value and dehydrogenase activity, and microbial metabolism activity was restrained.During steady state, the concentration of protein and carbonhydrate in the effluent and mixture supernatant respectively contributed to 95% and 64% of the TOC.SMP were main pollutants of mixture supernatant and effluent in the MBR.

For the efficient interception performance of the membrane, some biological aspect in membrane bioreactor are different from those in the activated sludge process. The physiological and biochemical characteristics of microbial community, activated sludge, and microbial products in the membrane bioreactor are illustrated in this paper.

A review concerning the production of soluble microbial products (SMP) and their impact in a membrane bioreactor is presented in this paper. The high performance of membrane separation in the membrane bioreactor not only results in an increased organic loading rate and an improved effluent quality, but also builds the bioreactor as a relatively closed system. SMP, most of which have been identified as humic acid, polysaccharide and protein released from substrate metabolism and microbial endogenous growth, are found to comprise the majority of soluble TOC or COD in the biologically treated effluent. SMP accumulation was always observed in a membrane bioreactor due to its considerable macromolecular content and its slow biodegradable nature. Too much accumulated SMP may decrease the stability of the effluent quality, repress microbial viability, as well as result in serious membrane fouling. SMP formation is greatly influenced by influent concentration and sludge concentration. The knowledge about SMP in a membrane bioreactor is far from completion. Much work is still required to be done.

Membrane bioreactor(MBR)is a newly developed technique in recent years. A comparison is made between submerged membrane bioreactor and re - circulated membrane bioreactor to illustrate their advantages and disadvantages. The types, mechanisms, parameters and application status are studied, and the characteristics and problems of MBR are analyzed too.
