    Abstract:
Parathyroid adenomas have been demonstrated to occur following external head and neck irradiation. The median latency interval is 30 years. In a series of 74 consecutive patients with histologically diagnosed parathyroid adenomas, 25% gave a history of prior radiation exposure. When compared to a matched control incidence of 7.9%, statistical significance is reached at p < 0.01. Thyroid abnormalities were present in 68% of the irradiated patients, and 30% of these were malignant. Tumors of skin, breast, and parotid gland also occurred more frequently than expected. Forty-seven percent of the irradiated group had malignant neoplasms within the radiation field. The histopathology of the radiation-associated parathyroid adenomas is similar to that seen experimentally. Cancer 43:1078–1083, 1979.

To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of CapitalBio Mycobacterium real-time polymerase chain reaction assay (CapitalBio test) in spinal tuberculosis (STB). The value of histopathology combined with the CapitalBio test in diagnosing STB was also assessed. We retrospectively analyzed the medical information of suspected STB. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and area under the curve (AUC) of histopathology, CapitalBio test, and histopathology combined with CapitalBio test were calculated to evaluate their diagnostic efficacy compared with a composite reference standard.A total of 222 suspected STB patients were included in the study. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and AUC of histopathology for STB were recorded to be 62.0, 98.0, 97.4, 68.3%, and 0.80, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and AUC of the CapitalBio test were 75.2, 98.0, 97.9, 76.7%, and 0.87, respectively, while that of histopathology combined with the CapitalBio test was 81.0, 96.0, 96.1, 80.8%, and 0.89, respectively.Histopathology and CapitalBio test exhibited high accuracy and are recommended in diagnosing STB. Histopathology combined with the CapitalBio test might give the best efficacy in STB diagnosis.

Aim: Diagnostic accuracy of MRI for diagnosis of acute invasive fungal sinusitis by taking histopathology as gold standard Study design: Cross sectional study at Radiology department, Ittefaq Hospital Lahore Duration: Six months from 23-02-2018 to 23-08-2018 A total of 346 cases fulfilling inclusion & exclusion criteria were taken. All cases were done MRI procedure. Histopathology reports were also obtained. The results obtained were used to calculate the diagnostic accuracy. Results: The male were 195(56.4%) and female were 151(43.6%). On histopathology, 120(34.7%) cases showed positive results. By MRI study, 114(32.9%) cases were of positive finding. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value of MRI was 90%, 97.4%, 94.7% and 94.8% respectively and diagnostic accuracy of MRI was 94.8%. Conclusion: For diagnosing acute invasive fungal sinusitis, there is high diagnostic accuracy of MRI taking histopathology as gold standard. Keywords: sinus fungal infection, histopathology, MRI

To evaluate the histopathological examination of peri-implant tissue samples as a technique in the diagnosis of postoperative spinal implant infection (PSII).This was a retrospective analysis. Patients who underwent revision spinal surgery at our institution were recruited for this study. PSII was diagnosed by clinical signs, histopathology, and microbiological examination of intraoperatively collected samples. Histopathology was defined as the gold standard. The sensitivity for histopathology was calculated. A total of 47 patients with PSII and at least one microbiological and histopathological sample were included in the study.PSII occurred in approximately 28% of the study population. Histopathology showed a sensitivity of 51.1% in the diagnosis of PSII. The most commonly found pathogens were Cutibacterium acnes and gram-positive staphylococci.Histopathology has low sensitivity for detecting PSII. In particular, infections caused by low-virulence microorganisms are insufficiently detected by histopathology. Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2020;102-B(7):899-903.

This chapter discusses the process and content of a histopathology report, including the supplementary report. As well as containing all the patient demographical information, the report is divided into specific sections. A histopathology report is a verified document that contains a diagnosis, which is determined following the examination of cells, tissues, and sometimes foreign or infectious agents under the microscope. The chapter then looks at the key microscopic observations seen in the two key areas of histopathology – inflammation and cancer. It highlights the use of diagnostic datasets and the role of tissue pathways in histopathology, as well as the value of molecular/genetic information in histopathology reports.

Spectrophotometric intracutaneous analysis (SIAscopy) is an imaging technique developed for diagnostics of pigmented skin lesions. By image analysis, the displayed images indicate the potential distribution and position of melanin, blood, and collagen within the lesion. A topographic comparison was performed between SIAscopic findings and histopathology. In total, 60 patients with suspicious pigmented skin lesions were included. The lesions were SIAscopically imaged and documented before excision and histopathological preparation. Topographical comparisons between SIAscopy findings and histopathology were made. A sensitivity and specificity of 24% and 84%, respectively, were obtained for invasive melanomas. The positive and negative predicted values were 58% and 54%, respectively. The features indicating dermal melanin, blood displacement and collagen holes did only show "no" to "slight" agreement with histopathology, i.e., κ ≤ 0.21. It was concluded that (i) SIAscopy-based diagnosis has low diagnostic accuracy for melanoma, (ii) single SIAscopic features do not provide reliable diagnostic information relating to the lesions internal structure on histopathology examination and (iii) SIAscopy cannot be used as a guide for localizing the maximum tumor thickness when performing the histopathological examination. The importance of validating new optical tools for tumor diagnostics with histopathological findings was demonstrated.

Evaluation of histopathology, culture and guinea pig inoculation in 58 patients provisionally diagnosed as having osteoarticular tuberculosis in the Department of Orthopedics, P.B.M. Hospital, Bikaner is presented. The following conclusions were reached. Where facilities exist, all the investigations should be carried out in each case to obviate chances of missing the diagnosis and if possible all the pathological material available should be used. Otherwise histopathology plus guinea pig inoculation or histopathology plus culture should be mandatory. Clinical examination, radiological evidence and gross appearances of the lesion can only serve as an aid to preliminary diagnosis and/or prognosis.

To compare imprint cytology with histopathology regarding diagnostic accuracies and quickness in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal malignancies.Multiple endoscopic biopsies were taken from 146 patients having various lesions without a prior histopathological diagnosis. Imprint smears were prepared, using all biopsied tissues, on 3-5 slides. Tissues were fixed in 10% formalin. Time from the materials were received at the pathology laboratory to when the results were available was recorded. Cytopathologists and histopathologists, blinded to each other's diagnosis, examined the imprint smears and tissues.Average time to get imprint cytology results was shorter than that of histopathology (55 minutes vs. 8 days). Fifty-eight patients had a final diagnosis of malignancy. Histopathology and imprint were positive in 56 and 54, respectively. Eighty-eight patients had benign histopathology, all of these had negative imprint results. False-negative and false-positive rates for imprint were 6.8%, 0% and for histopathology were 3.4%, 0%, respectively.Imprint cytology is an easy, reliable method that can be used as an adjunctive measure with histopathology. It gives the earliest information about the nature of the lesion with a minimum misdiagnosis risk. Imprint cytology lets the surgeon plan a therapeutic strategy approximately 1 week earlier.
