    Abstract:
Abstract Design features created by a feature based design system could theoretically be directly sent to machining preparation system. This, however, has not been found and feature modification is still necessary. A feature modification framework is proposed in this paper for bridging the gap between the design features and machining features. Feature modification algorithms were also developed for the foundation of the framework. A prototype system is presented and illustrated by an explanation of how the feature modification concept could function in a real situation.

A research was carried out on the method of 2D feature modelling and the process of development of 2D feature modelling system has been introduced in order to support the integration of CAD/CAPP. The scheme being adopted is a combination of feature design and feature recognition. In order to obtain the feature in complete sense, the design of shape feature is employed firstly and than carried out recognition of precision feature.

Recognition of feature is an important topic in feature-based system. The ways used at large about feature checking can not be use for product models with complicated to-pology and lots of features.Improving feature checking efficiency is one of the most challenge questions in the researching on features modeling technology.A new feature strategy was put forward by BAM neural network checking technology, and this method solved effectively the problem about CAD/CAM capability limitation.

This paper reports the first phase of a research project to implement and apply Feature Type Recognition (FTR). This technology has many potential areas of application, such as case retrieval, product finding, translating models between schemas, and certain types of analysis. Feature Type Recognition is part of the Internet based design knowledge sharing system developed at the authors' department. The system allows communication of highly abstract concepts as well as concrete data. Additionally, it supports a layered approach to modelling, which will facilitate standardisation efforts. Feature Type Recognition is the process of finding feature types that correspond to a specific feature instance. The paper shows how feature based modelling creates a foundation for feature type recognition. Additionally, it presents and discusses how the Recognizing Feature Manager has been implemented. Application of Feature Type Recognition to building product finding will take place in the second phase of the research project. However, the paper already discusses basic principles of how this can be done.

Traditional engineering design and realization typically follows a sequential pattern as described by many research publications such as French, Pahl and Beitz. These design methodologies face challenges when time is essence in product realization lifecycle. In contrast, as the design process of a product evolves, this new method incrementally creates machining feature model and realizes concurrent design feature and machining feature modeling based on an algorithm developed for local feature recognition. In addition, the method accelerated the determination of the area that require to be recognized by utilizing a dynamic link list to record the changing information of topological elements, the design features of the model generated by the feature-based design, processing and feature recognition is generated through feature model.

In order to solve the problem of reconstructing the product shape,a feature method was presented which can decomposed the product model to four parts of features, assembly feature, function feature, freeform feature and ordinary feature. The reconstruction for each feature was analyzed.A module based on UG software was developed for reconstructing the product shape.

Abstract The concept of form features originated in the process planning of machined parts. However, it is now perceived to have applications in many other phases of the engineering process, from initial design through to inspection and assembly, and, as in process planning, the use of form features appears to be crucial in the automation of these activities. From the viewpoints of the different processes occurring in the product life-cycle a given product has different characterizations in terms of form features. This paper explores some of the implications of the resulting requirement for multiple feature models. A designer will most naturally wish to generate a CAD model in terms of functional features, and the system should then be capable of transmuting the designer's feature model into the appropriate feature model for any desired downstream application. This appears to be a simpler process than that of automatic feature recognition from a pure geometric model, a currently popular but difficult research topic. It is also pointed out that designing in terms of features brings with it the need for continual automatic feature validation during the design process. The paper concludes by suggesting a means of progress towards suitably flexible feature representations for a general-purpose system of the future.

Abstract This paper presents an integration method that constructs a feature model either by inserting new features or by recognizing features from existing geometric model. The integration is made possible by keeping the feature model data structure that is identical whether constructed by the feature insertion or the recognition. This overcomes the representational mismatch between the procedural feature-based modeling framework and the feature recognition framework. The integrated framework has been implemented as a CADCAM system for mould die manufacturing, which can interactively modify the geometric model by deleting recognized features.
