The body part ownership is elicited in 23 s, and the full-body illusion is produced in 5 s. Our previous study has shown that synchronized hands and feet movements produce the full-body illusion at an empty space between the hands and feet in 5 min at most, but the exact onset time is still unclear. This study investigated the optimal learning method and learning time for the invisible body illusion by measuring the onset time of the illusion in active movement and static observation. As a result, the illusion was produced after 6.93 s of synchronized movement or 4.67 s of static observation. These results suggest that both active movement and static observation are effective for the invisible body illusion.

Abstract : Some people believe that America has had no real grand strategy since the end of the Cold War. Critics argue that the Bush Doctrine and America's War on Terrorism is not a true grand strategy because it lacks a coherent unifying framework, is highly resource intensive, and is unsustainable over the long term. America is at the pinnacle of its global power and influence, but it will not last forever. Many recommend that America use this valuable time to develop a grand strategy that will place it in a favorable future position. A well-thought-out and articulated grand strategy should result in national security, economic prosperity, fulfilled national interests, and favorable political outcomes. Ultimately, for the sake of America's grand destiny, it is important that we get our next grand strategy right. This project examines the definition of grand strategy, provides an example of good grand strategy, and analyzes the nation's current grand strategy and strategic environment. The paper concludes with a recommendation for which of several proposed grand strategies should become America's next post-9/11 grand strategy for the 21st Century.

Grand Strategy in Grand Complexity Consolidating Ideas, Interests, and Resources in a Postmodern World For Liddell Hart, war is a prerequisite for grand strategy. In his view, grand strategy should “look beyond the war to the subsequent peace” and seek to combine all instruments of national power and the nation’s resources “to avoid damage to the future state of peace – for security and prosperity”. On the contrary, the U.S. engagements in Afghanistan and Iraq suggest that a grand strategy is not a prerequisite to age war. Hence, why not think about grand strategy before the next war? The problem is, of course, that the future cannot be predicted.

Anomalous motion illusions represent a popular class of illusions and several studies have made an effort to explain their perception. However, understanding is still inconsistent. Age-related differences in susceptibility to illusory motion may contribute to further clarification of the underlying processing mechanisms. We investigated the effect of age on the perception of four different anomalous motion illusions. The Enigma illusion, the Rotating-Snakes illusion, the Pinna illusion, and the Rotating-Tilted-Lines illusion were tested on a total of one hundred and thirty-nine participants covering an age range from 3 to 82 years. In comparison with young adults, children showed a lower likelihood of perceiving motion in all illusions with the exception of the Rotating-Tilted-Lines illusion. For adult subjects, we found significant age effects in the Rotating-Snakes illusion and the Rotating-Tilted-Lines illusion: occurrence of the illusory effect decreased with age. The other two illusions turned out to be unaffected by aging. Finally, inter-correlations between different motion illusions revealed that only the Pinna illusion and the Rotating-Tilted-Lines illusion correlated significantly with each other. The results confirm that anomalous motion illusions should not be considered as a homogeneous group. Possible links between perceptual data and neurophysiological changes related to age are discussed. Perceptual differences due to age provide the opportunity to improve our understanding of illusory motion and point to specific underlying mechanisms.

Studies on the footsteps illusion proposed by Anstis (2001) and its variants are reviewed in this article. The footsteps illusion has been explained as a difference in perceived speed depending on edge contrast (Thompson, 1982). In addition to this explanation, it is suggested that the footsteps illusion and its variants can also be attributed to the geometrical illusion presented by Gregory and Heard (1983), to the extinction effect similar to hidden images by Wade (1990), and to subsequent position or motion captures. Related illusions, for example, the kickback illusion (Howe, Thompson, Anstis, Sagreiya, & Livingstone, 2006), the kick-forward illusion, the driving-on-a-bumpy-road illusion, or the footsteps illusion based upon reverse phi motion, are discussed in this article.
