    Abstract:
The 4 X 4 multiple CCD X-ray detector installed in the beamline 45XU of the SPring-8 facility in Japan was examined by acquiring X-ray diffraction images of lysozyme crystals. The detector system was calibrated at the beamline by observing X-ray images of a flood-field and a mask pattern generated by the synchrotron radiation X-ray beam. It was found in the present work that the quality of the X-ray images observed is limited by an unexpected spike noise, the origin of which was suspected to be the (gamma) -rays emitted from the radioisotopes remaining in the X-ray scintillating screen. Image analysis carried out with a median filter predicted, however, that the image quality could be as high as designed, once the noise as well as the grain colonization is removed from the screen.

PLASTIQUE is the only synchrotron radiation beamline in the world that performs time resolved fluorescence experiments in frequency domain. These experiments are extremely valuable sources of information on the structure and dynamics of molecules. We describe the beamline and some initial data.

A new soft x‐ray beamline BL17SU (RIKEN) has been constructed at SPring‐8. The beamline consists of two branches with each varied‐line‐spacing‐plane‐grating‐monochromator. Both monochromators perform high energy resolution (E/ΔE > 10,000) between 0.2 and 1 keV. One of the monochromator achieves high energy stability of 10 meV over a period of half a day.

High pressure research system using the synchrotron radiation and the Kawai-type of high pressure apparatus was installed at BL04B1 beamline of SPring-8 in 1997. The BL04B1, named “High Pressure and High Temperature” beamline has been designed to conduct research on the structure and properties of materials under high pressure and high temperature. The developments of the beamline and experimental facilities during the eight years are summarized. In addition, recent researches using the newly developed techniques are also reviewed.

The main components of a new beamline for surface and interface crystal structure determination at SPring-8 are briefly described. Stages for the beamline monochromator are modified for making an incident X-ray intensity more stable for surface X-ray experiments. Absolute photon flux densities were measured with an incident photon energy. A new ultrahigh vacuum system is introduced with preliminary X-ray measurements from an ordered oxygen on Pt (111) surface.

A one-kilometer long synchrotron radiation beamline with an x- ray undulator source was completed at SPring-8. The beamline was planned to facilitate various applications of a wide-area coherent x-ray beam, development of bi-crystal x-ray interferometers for gravitational red-shift measurement and development of highly sensitive diagnostic methods of accelerator dynamics. This paper reports the structure of the long beamline as well as some selected first results including phase contrast imaging and diffraction imaging applications.

A micro-focused X-ray beam with size ranging from 1 × 1 to 10 × 10 μm has been achieved at beamline BL32XU at SPring-8, Japan. Combining the available micro-beam with newly developed techniques has enabled efficient protein micro-crystallography.
