Abstract:
Student-run clinics (SRCs) are widespread, but studies on their educational impact are limited. We surveyed preclinical medical, nursing, and pharmacy students about their experiences in a hepatitis B elective which provided opportunities to they could volunteer at hepatitis B screening and vaccination SRCs. Student responses revealed positive perceptions of the volunteer experience. Benefits included interacting with patients, developing clinical skills, providing service to disadvantaged populations, and collaborating with health professional peers. Students who participated in clinic reported enhanced skills compared to those who did not attend. SRCs play a valuable role in instilling positive attitudes and improving skills. Keywords:

Abstract The occupational aspirations and interests of a sample of culturally disadvantaged children aged 15½ years and a matched control group were compared. Whilst the disadvantaged boys aspired to jobs of lower social-class status than their control-group peers, the two girls' groups showed very similar aspiration levels, and the disadvantaged group as a whole was oriented towards skilled jobs. The mean occupational interest profiles of the groups did not differ significantly. A higher proportion of the disadvantaged children were reported as being unemployed shortly after leaving school. It is concluded that there was a serious mismatch between the career aspirations of some of the disadvantaged group and their prospects. Ways in which this might be reduced through better school careers guidance and education programmes are briefly considered.

This Policy Insights examines the well-being of children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds in comparison to their more advantaged peers. It shows that children from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to experience poor material outcomes, poor health, and worse education, as well as poorer social and emotional outcomes. These early well-being inequalities are rooted in the poorer environments that disadvantaged children face, making social inequalities in child well-being outcomes particularly difficult to address. There is a need for consistent support across all domains to address these challenges and improve the life experiences and outcomes of disadvantaged children.

One out of every three Americans is being termed “disadvantaged.” Music educators must become aware of this problem. In some areas of the country music teachers have developed programs specifically designed for the disadvantaged. Others have instituted provisions to accommodate disadvantaged and culturally deprived youth through their existing programs. Descriptions of several programs for disadvantaged youth in the field of music education append this article.

advantaged has been referred to as culturally deprived, culturally different, socially disadvantaged, underprivileged, and slow learners by other people in other places. Precise definition is at this point nonexistent in the journals and in current research. There are, however, some descriptions and some attempts at definition which are more nearly precise and fruitful than others. A quick look at them here should bring the into clearer focus. Following examination of these descriptions, the disadvantaged student as conceived of in this series will be described. A relatively clear idea of the disadvantaged student should emerge at that point. In the professional literature, discussion and description of the disadvantaged falls into two general categories. First, the disadvantaged are described from social and psychological points of view. It is with this approach that terms such as culturally deprived, socially disadvantaged, underprivileged, and so on, are most frequently usedappearing again and again in the numerous works in the field. Central here are self-con-

Using French administrative data on secondary school teachers, we analyze a non-pecuniary, career-path oriented centralized incentive scheme designed to attract and retain teachers in French disadvantaged schools. We rely on a major reform of the structure of this incentive scheme to identify its effect on teacher turnover, retention, and quality in disadvantaged schools. We find this incentive scheme has a statistically significant positive effect on the number of consecutive years teachers stay in disadvantaged schools and decreases the probability of in- experienced teachers in disadvantaged schools to leave the profession. However, we find no statistically significant effect on the teacher experience gap nor the student achievement gap between disadvantaged and non disadvantaged schools.

With the dismantling of apartheid and the opening of universities to people from sociopolitically disadvantaged communities, the issue of relevant selection procedures has become increasingly pressing in South Africa. This study aimed at exploring the relative value of various predictots for disadvantaged versus advantaged students. Subjects comprised the 26 students enrolled in a pre-university Faculty of Commerce bridging yesr, 18 of whom were ftom educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. Generally, the academic success of disadvantaged, was considerably less predictable than that advantaged students. Further, universally-used matriculation criterion was not a significant predictor for either the disadvantaged or the advantaged, while the dynamic and process measures applied were also not significant predictors for disadvantaged students. The results were seen as supporting the need for an alternative approach to selection. and a of enrichment programmes themselves.
