Abstract:
The propagation characteristics of 75-MHz ultrasonic waves through molecular films of arachidic acid have been investigated. On thermal cycling through the melting temperature the ordered films break up into islands of disordered arachidic acid. With the help of an ultrasonic pulse-difference technique we could detect changes in the transmitted signal when arachidic acid islands as thin as 500 Å changed from the solid to the liquid state. It is suggested that similar experiments at higher frequencies could be of value in the investigation of phase changes and general structural properties of biological membranes. Keywords:

The arrangement of C 60 molecules in mixed C 60 /arachidic acid LB films has been studied by means of UV-visible spectrum,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. The results confirm the conclusion obtained in part Ⅰ of this series,i.e. the C 60 molecules are concealed in the arachidic acid molecules instead of positioning on the ends of the lipophilic tails of the acid molecules.

The article describes the features of the formation of arachidic acid Langmuir monolayers on a water or NiCl2 solution subphase surface. Monolayers structure was investigated by analyzing the compression isotherms and Brewster angle microscopy methods. Films on the solid substrate (glass plates) were investigated by atomic force microscopy method for morphology. Film structure was studied as a function of the concentration of salt in subphase and exposure time. It is shown that the structure of films obtained by using NiCl2

Langmuir films have been prepared using pure C60 and arachidic acid mixed with C60 in the ratio of 1 : 1 and 4.2 : 1. Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films were then deposited on a variety of substrates with Y-type deposition being observed. Films containing bilayers of arachidic acid alternating with both single and double monolayers of C60 were prepared. The structure of the arachidic acid component in the mixed films was investigated by grazing-incidence FTIR spectroscopy and was shown to be similar to that in an LB film of pure arachidic acid. The absence of structural disruption in the presence of C60 provides strong evidence for an ordered alternant arrangement of fullerenes and arachidic acid in the films.
