The use of modern methods of thematic analysis for the analytical processing of large amounts of information is currently used in almost all spheres of human activity. Scientometrics is one such area. Research carried out in this area shows that the statistical characteristics of citation rates are highly dependent on the thematic area of papers at hand. In this regard, systems for calculating citation indicators and constructing assessments of the quality of scientific works, ranks of authors or organizations should take into account the thematic area of researchers in order to normalize scientometric indicators. Many scientometric systems and citation systems use subject headings for information retrieval and processing. The world famous citation systems, including WoS, Scopus, Google Shcolar, and others have such headings. Important practical tasks that can be solved using the methods of thematic classification are: assessment of the dynamics of the development of thematic areas in an organization, in a particular country and in world science as a whole; search for articles on a given topic; search and assessment of the authority of experts; search for journals for publication and other urgent tasks. The authors have created software implementations of algorithms for solving some of the listed problems, and research is being conducted to create new effective mathematical models and algorithms in this area.

Most important tasks that can be solved using thematic classification methods are: assessment of the dynamics of the development of thematic areas in the organization, country and in world science; search for articles on a given topic; search and assessment of the authority of experts; search for journal for publication and other relevant tasks. The Lomonosov Moscow State University is currently developing and using the system ISTINA. In this project, algorithms have been created that solve some of the problems listed. Scientific research is underway to create new effective mathematical models and algorithms in this area.

In general, the developers of Decision Support Systems (DSS) look for objectivity and the support of the rational choice.These guiding principles are rarely reflected upon because they are so successful for technical problems and within the humanities.However, the majority of DSS for military purposes-especially in the context of the new tasks related to transformation of the armed forces-have to deal with social systems.These systems differ significantly from systems with no human interaction.First, there is an irreducible amount of uncertainty about the cause-effect-relations in such systems, which leads to unpredictability of many phenomena.Second, there is also a non-negligible amount of uniqueness in each event that makes it extremely hard to find general rules, which may help to find reproducible behavior.Third, most events cannot be evaluated from an objective point of view since every evaluation depends on subjective criteria.In the quest for objectivity and using the Rational Analytical Decision-Making Framework (RADMF) easily leads to erroneously take personal assumptions for apodictic postulations, which are originally based on prejudice and dogmatism.It also often results in lack of critical discussion because an objectively-best solution can only be questioned outside the decision framework.Therefore, this article advises on the use of transparency instead of objectivity and of heuristic decision frameworks instead of the RADMF.

This paper aims to map the research trend in the field of knowledge management (KM) by presenting a systematic and analytical scientometrics approach based on data from the Web of Science (WoS). The method for science mapping includes the following steps: Defining the domain; identifying keywords related to KM field and its subfields; conducting searches and collecting the publication and citation data from WoS; drawing the structure of scientific productions using scientometrics tools; enriching the science maps by adding new attributes; and analyzing the results. In this study, we provide a visualization overview of the wide distribution of KM publications. The analysis of clusters of the historiographical maps, based on Local Citation Score (LCS) and Global Citation Score (GCS), indicated the most frequent thematic trends. The co-word occurrence analysis for mapping KM research topics shows that the structure of fundamental subject areas within the field of KM has changed and expanded dynamically during 2004-2010. This study could be useful for researchers and subject specialists as well as policy makers as they may view and study the history of a discipline by drawing the structure of its scientific productions, in order to do strategically plan and determine the research priorities in the discipline.

Thematic mapping and scientific visualization are two dedicated areas for visualizing a wide range of domain-specific data sets. From a general perspective, thematic mapping and scientific visualization reveal large overlaps in terms of visualization methods. However, these two disciplines are shaped by different driving forces and usage purposes. Accordingly, the concerns involved in the thematic mapping workflow that ranges from data source, data processing to map design principles may be quite different from those for scientific visualization and vice versa. Although some interdisciplinary researches between general mapping and scientific visualization have been conducted, little knowledge about the differences and commonalities between thematic mapping and scientific visualization is available. This research work is devoted to an in-depth comparative study with the aim to bridge these two disciplines by identifying their methodological strengths and synergetic effects. Comparison results show that thematic mapping goes steps further than scientific visualization in terms of data preprocessing, while scientific visualization relies more on the capability of users to visually process the data by themselves. We believe that scientific visualization can very well profit from thematic mapping methods to achieve some communication effects while thematic mapping can be very well extended to embrace some scientific visualization methods for the hotspot explorations.
