    The 24-hr. intake of saccharin and sucrose solutions was higher when rats were maintained at reduced body weights than when food was freely available. Intake of both kinds of solution during 3-hr. tests, as a proportion of 24-hr. intake, increased with concentration. Water consumption outside of tests reflected solution consumption during tests. These results suggest that the increased intake of sucrose solutions during deprivation is at least partially dependent on palatability.

    Male Wistar rats were able to drink water and different percentages of ethyl alcohol in a free-choice paradigm. Addition of quinine in both drinking-bottles increased preference for alcohol, while dilution of saccharin in both bottles totally supressed this preference for the alcohol bottle. These results are discussed in terms of a gustatory balance based upon the palatability of the solutions in which alcohol was diluted, and the palatability offered by alcohol itself.
