Abstract:
A qualitative descriptive study was developed to gain an insight into the experiences of patients with operable cancer of the oesophagus and the information they received. Through semistructured interviews, participants related details about different aspects of information-giving. Key sources of information were the consultant surgeon and other patients. Nurses, other medical staff, physiotherapists and dieticians were then mentioned. Family/friends were poor sources. Positive and negative aspects of the verbal and written information given were described, but there was minimal support for audiovisual information. Participants were given information relating to a number of key areas: treatment details, side-effects, extent of their disease, cure and prognosis and return to normality. A number of problem areas were identified. The findings indicate a need for a thoracic nurse specialist, updating of the information booklet and development of a staff education programme. Keywords:

ABSTRACT Communicating medical information to patients is a major responsibility of physicians. Do consumer health information centers assist physicians in this critical task? This study examines the effect of consumer health information packets on patients' knowledge of their diagnosis or condition, comfort in making personal health decisions, and self-reported levels of anxiety. Study results were then compared to three prior investigations. The impact of the information packets on the relationship between physician and patient was also considered. A total of 105 patients receiving health information packets from a consumer health information center completed a follow-up questionnaire. Patients reported benefiting greatly from the information provided and felt it enhanced their relationship with their providers.

Web based applications enable easy access to patients' information across health centres. Sharing information across hospitals allows health practitioners to have real time data needed to deliver effective healthcare services. Before the introduction of web based applications, practitioners' recorded patient information on manual papers. This manual processes encountered various challenges as such information was never readily available for sharing with practitioner from other hospitals. As result medical processes were often delayed Web based health, patient information model is a new approach to managing patient information that is not shared with other medical personnel around the country. This paper adopts a case study approach. Three health institutions in Namibia are engaged. Results show that there is no access to patients' records for medical practitioners especially when patients do not have medical record hardcopy card. This paper discussed the benefits that WBHPISM well designed and implemented can save the health sector and patients a lot of trouble, time and money.

We did a prevalence survey among patients attending Obstetrics and Gynaecology clinics on internet-based health information accessed by our patients. Nearly 60% of patients had accessed web-based information before attending our specialist clinics. But only 4% were aware of the recommended website from which to access information. The patients felt the information obtained through common search engines like Yahoo and Google were unclear and confusing. With increasing access to internet-based health information, the medical community needs to address the problems of web-based health information and direct the patients to evaluated and approved websites.

Use of the Internet to access health and medical information has grown significantly in the past several years and is projected to increase among physicians alone by 25% to 43% in the next year. Three obstacles face individuals searching for medical information on the Web-accessing the desired information, assessing the quality of the information found, and applying the information in the person's life. This article provides guidance on overcoming each of these obstacles.

Keeping health information confidential is an important aspect of managing health information. This study aimed at determining the performance of health information management departments (HIMD) to identify the policies of these hospitals, their similarities, and differences in their procedures in this respect. Managers of the departments and information disclosure and medical record staff in 22 teaching hospitals were invited to complete a questionnaire regarding their practices in four axes including confidentiality principles, principles of disclosure consent, disclosure information to external and internal users. We found that there are no specific national framework and guidelines for the disclosure of health information. Hospitals are undertaking different ways in this regard. In most cases, patients' consent is not considered necessary for disclosure and only hospital managers' or physicians' consent is sufficient.
