    Abstract:
    BackgroundLiving near traffic has been associated with asthma and other respiratory symptoms. Most studies, however, have been conducted in areas with high background levels of ambient air pollution, making it challenging to isolate an independent effect of traffic. Additionally, most investigations have used surrogates of exposure, and few have measured traffic pollutants directly as part of the study.ObjectiveWe conducted a cross-sectional study of current asthma and other respiratory symptoms in children (n = 1,080) living at varying distances from high-traffic roads in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, a highly urbanized region characterized by good regional air quality due to coastal breezes.MethodsWe obtained health information and home environmental factors by parental questionnaire. We assessed exposure with several measures of residential proximity to traffic calculated using geographic information systems, including traffic within a given radius and distance to major roads. We also measured traffic-related pollutants (nitrogen oxides and nitrogen dioxide) for a subset of households to determine how well traffic metrics correlated with measured traffic pollutants.ResultsUsing multivariate logistic regression analyses, we found associations between current asthma and residential proximity to traffic. For several traffic metrics, children whose residences were in the highest quintile of exposure had approximately twice the adjusted odds of current asthma (i.e., asthma episode in the preceeding 12 months) compared with children whose residences were within the lowest quintile. The highest risks were among those living within 75 m of a freeway/highway. Most traffic metrics correlated moderately well with actual pollutant measurements.ConclusionOur findings provide evidence that even in an area with good regional air quality, proximity to traffic is associated with adverse respiratory health effects in children.

    This review presents a brief overview of the health effects and exposures of two criteria pollutants--ozone and particulate matter--and two toxic air pollutants--benzene and formaldehyde. These pollutants were selected from the six criteria pollutants and from the 189 toxic air pollutants on the basis of their prevalence in the United States, their physicochemical behavior, and the magnitude of their potential health threat. The health effects data included in this review primarily include results from epidemiologic studies; however, some findings from animal studies are also discussed when no other information is available. Health effects findings for each pollutant are related in this review to corresponding information about outdoor, indoor, and personal exposures and pollutant sources.

    In the existing environmental air quality evaluation index system, the AQI depends on the concentration of the dominant pollutant in the six types of air pollutants. However, the interaction among different pollutants and the effect of the combination of pollutants on AQI is rarely studied. In this paper, concentrations of six types of air pollutants and corresponding AQI of Tianjin in 2018 were taken as samples, and trained by Choquet integral. The Shapley interaction index of six types of pollutants are obtained by nonadditive measure. Based on the Shapley interaction index, the weights of six air pollutants on AQI and the interaction among different pollutants were analyzed. The results show that the main air pollutants in Tianjin in 2018 are PM2.5 and O 3 , and there is a negative interaction between them. Finally, the trained model is used to recalculate AQI of Tianjin in the first three months of 2019, providing a reference for air quality evaluation.
    Based on the statistical result of the air monitor data in Nanchang city,this paper summarized the change regularity of the air pollutant in this city,analyzed the causes of the air pollutant and discovered the related pollutant characteristics.Some ideas are proposed to subdue the air pollutant,which offer the scientific basis for environmental program.

    Monitoring air pollutants via plants is an economic, convenient and credible method compared with the traditional ways. Plants show different damage symptoms to different air pollutants, which can be used to determine the species of air pollutants. Besides, pollutants mass concentration scope can be estimated by the damage extent of plants and the span of polluted time. Based on the research at home and overseas, this paper discusses the principles, mechanism, advantages and disadvantages of plant-monitoring, exemplifies plenty of such plants and the minimum mass concentration and pollution time of the plants showing damage symptoms. Finally, the methods and many advantages of using plants to monitor air pollutants are introduced.

    Nowadays air over major cities has become over burdened with gases produced by automobiles throughout the world. The present study was conducted to investigate and monitor the ambient air quality. The results indicated the following mean concentrations (μg/m3): PM2.5 (138.25, 214.5, 234.5), NO2 (218, 170.4, 230.9), SO2 (196.5, 184.3, 189), CO (108.5, 82.04, 81.7) and O3 (680.2, 525.38, 590.5) for residential, industrial and vehicular sites in the respective order. Most of the pollutants were found to increase in winter except SO2 and CO which showed high concentrations in spring and autumn respectively. The results suggested that there was strong positive bivariate correlation being observed between each pair of pollutants (PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO and O3 with p<0.01 or p<0.05). Pearson Correlation is applied to evaluate the correlation between different pollutants. The results depicts that increased concentration levels of pollutants (PM2.5, NO2) being observed at vehicular site on the other hand elevated concentration level of pollutants (SO, CO, O3) was seen at residential site.

    This review summarized the study about pllutants inside vehicles in the world.Exposure to some air pollutants and toxic compounds may be several times higher inside vehicles than in ambient air.     Because the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulates air pollutants independently, the majority of time-series studies on air pollution and mortality have focused on estimating the adverse health effects of a single pollutant. However, due to the sometimes high correlation between air pollutants, the results from studies that focus on a single air pollutant can be difficult to interpret. In addition, the high correlation between air pollutants can produce problems of interpretation for the standard method of investigating the adverse health effects due to multiple air pollutants. The standard method involves simultaneously including the multiple air pollutants in a single statistical model. Because of this, the development of new models to concurrently estimate the adverse health effects of multiple air pollutants has recently been identified as an important area of future research. In this article, a new model for disentangling the joint effects of multiple air pollutants in air pollution mortality time-series studies is introduced. This new model uses the time-series data to assign each air pollutant a weight that indicates the pollutant's contribution to the air pollution mixture that affects mortality and to estimate the effect of this air pollution mixture on mortality. This model offers an improvement in statistical estimation precision over the standard method. It also avoids problems of interpretation that can occur if the standard method is used. This new model is then illustrated by applying it to time-series data from two U.S. counties.
