    Abstract:
    The concentration of methylmercury (MMC) and total mercury (TMC) in marine fishes (five species) frequently consumed in the coastal areas of Zhejiang province, China, was determined. The method of high-performance liquid chromatography-atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC-AFS) with the microwave-assisted extraction was used for the MMC determination. TMC was analysed by a direct mercury analyser. MMC and TMC concentrations in five fish species ranged from 53 to 158 µg kg⁻¹ and 60 to 172 µg kg⁻¹, respectively. The proportion of MMC levels in TMC was greater than 80%. The highest MMC and TMC levels were found in Hairtail.

    Our understanding of fish and fishing images in Early Christian art is complicated by patristic writers who have given contradictory interpretations of the waters as both the "sea of sin" and "living water." In this article the implications of this paradoxical interpretation are explored, and a new group of marine scenes, which are here designated "fish ponds," are seen as images of "living water."

    Eighteen under-utilized marine fish and shell fish species were studied for their gel forming ability and surimi was prepared from all of the fish species.Difference in proximate composition and muscle pH of raw fish and the surimi products were also studied.Four species, namely, T. thalassinus.S. sihama, L. savala and C. macrolepidotus were found with extremely elastic gel forming ability (AA) and among others eight species were with moderately elastic gel (A).Two species, C. guttatum and M. cordyla were found with very poor gelling quality.Relation between muscle pH and water retention with the gelling quality of the fish has also studied.

    Investigation on availability of commercially important marine fin fish and shell fish along Okha fish landing center, Gujarat was carried out during Jan 2011 to Dec 2011. On site sampling of marine fin fish and shell fish species were fort-nightly from Okha fish landing center. Total number species 89 fishes and 24 shell fishes were identified and recorded. The local name of fin fishes and shell fishes has been recorded as per locally known.

    Human exposure to methylmercury(MeHg) via fish consumption was evaluated by analyzing MeHg concentrations in seven kinds of freshwater fishes and five kinds of marine fishes in Guangzhou.The results indicated that the MeHg in fish muscles ranged from 2.39 μg·kg-1 to 349 μg·kg-1,with an average of 43.4 μg·kg-1.The MeHg concentrations in fishes of different feeding habits decreased as carnivorouspantophagousherbivorous,which may be due to that they are in different levels of the food chain.The MeHg concentration in the muscle of marine fish was higher than that in the freshwater fish.The MeHg concentrations in fishes from Guangzhou markets did not exceed the maximum allowed level set by domestic or abroad organizations,and were comparable to those in fishes from other domestic markets,but significantly lower than those in the wild fishes.Via fish consumption,human were exposed to MeHg with a range value of 0.035~0.087 μg·kg-1·d-1(bw) and an average of 0.050 μg·kg-1·d-1(bw),which were lower than the reference dose(RfD)(1.1 μg·kg-1·d-1) established by US EPA and the provisional tolerable weekly intake(PTWI)(1.6 μg·kg-1) by WHO/FAO.In Guangzhou,human exposure to MeHg via fish consumption was relatively low,but attention should be paid to the quantity and frequency of special fishes consumed by the susceptible people,children in particular.

    Two groups of samples spanning 16 years are reported for methylmercury and total mercury. All the samples had been taken from commercial catches and represent 33 different commercially important New Zealand marine fish species. Results show the New Zealand fish species sampled have mean contents of total mercury that range between 0.02 and 2.48 mg kg-1 and mean contents of methylmercury that range from less than 0.04 to 1.97 mg kg-1.
