Periodontics has a long history of utilizing advances in science to expand and improve periodontal therapies. Recently the American Academy of Periodontology published the findings of the Contemporary Science Workshop, which conducted state-of-the-art evidence-based reviews of current and emerging areas in periodontics. The findings of this workshop provide the basis for an evidence-based approach to periodontal therapy. While the workshop evaluated all areas of periodontics, it is in the area of tissue engineering that the most exciting advances are becoming a reality

To provide references and recommendations about periodontal professionals training for our country by introducing American training mode of clinical postgraduate students of periodontology. Based on ground visits and surveys of University of Washington School of Dentistry's postdoctoral program in periodontics, the professional training mode and its characteristics which adapt to the development trend of American periodontology were summarized and concluded. The discussion is in the following three parts: the overall status of postgraduate education of periodontology in the United States, the training mode of the clinical postgraduate students of periodontology at University of Washington School of Dentistry, and the observation of the American Academy of Periodontology's annual conferences. This kind of training mode supervised by the American Dental Association, giving priority to clinical practice and emphasizing cultivating the multidisciplinary comprehensive ability are worth learning. Meanwhile, the development trend of periodontology in the United States which pay increasing attention to carry out implant therapy with periodontal features and the adaptive training mode of clinical postgraduate students of periodontology also deserves our deep reflection and can be used for reference.学习和借鉴美国牙周专业临床研究生的专科培养模式，思考我国牙周专业人才未来的培养方向。通过实地访问和观察美国华盛顿大学牙医学院牙周专业研究生的学习过程，归纳总结美国牙周专业临床研究生专科培养模式及其适应美国牙周病学专业临床发展趋势的特点。从美国整体牙周病学专科教育现状、华盛顿大学牙医学院牙周临床研究生专科培养模式、美国牙周病学会学术年会观察3个方面，归纳总结美国牙周临床研究生的培养模式及其与美国牙周病学专业发展趋势相适应的转变。这种由美国牙科学会监管的教育评估体系及以临床实践为主、注重多学科综合能力培养的研究生训练模式，值得我国牙周专业研究生专科教育借鉴，同时美国牙周病学界日益注重开展牙周特色的种植治疗，牙周专业人才培养与该发展趋势的契合也值得我国牙周学界思考与借鉴。.

Periodontics overlaps regularly with the other dental disciplines and plays an important part in comprehensive dentistry. During the last decades a world-wide outgrowing research activity in basic science as well as in clinical research has contributed to a better understanding of the complexity of periodontal problems. The situation of periodontology in Germany must be improved. In order to obtain a better education in dental schools and consequently an optimal treatment of the patients, it is necessary to give to periodontology the same level of education as to other specialties in dentistry. Prophylaxis-oriented dentistry can only be established with the help of dental hygienists.

The aim was to assess the potential trends in Periodontology and Periodontics in Europe that might be anticipated by the year 2025, using the Delphi method.The expert opinion of 120 experts was sought through the use of an open-ended questionnaire, developed by an advisory group, containing 40 questions concerning the various trends in periodontology.The experts (113 responders) expect a stabilization of the prevalence of periodontitis, both for the chronic as well as the aggressive cases, but an increase in implant-related diseases up to the year 2025. Concurrently, the importance of implants is seen to be increasing. They foresee an increased demand for postgraduate periodontology and implantology training. This is mirrored in an increase in publications for implant dentistry and increase in demand and need for training. Concerning the patients, better-informed individuals seeking more routine check-ups are expected.A continued need for specialized periodontists, but also well trained dental practitioners is foreseen for next decade in Europe. Apart from periodontology they will be increasingly exposed to and trained in implant dentistry.
