Abstract:
Abstract Three main problems have to be solved in process gas chromatography: psychological, technical and economic. A simple concept already used with success for fifteen years by the author, called the Deferred Standard, is an answer for process GC and, to some extent, laboratory GC as well. That the injection of a pure compound in each analytical sequence is reproducible demonstrates the good working order of PGC. Accurate quantitative results may be obtained because the gas density balance is used as a calibrator detector for determining the relative response factors of the components of interest with respect to the Deferred Standard. By suppressing any calibration standards in process and laboratory chromatography, the Deferred Standard may reveal itself as a time and money saving technique.Cite

Twenty-five years ago I had a dream, a daydream, if you will. A dream shared with many of you. I dreamed of a special kind of computer, which had eyes and ears and arms and legs, in addition to its brain. I did not dream that this new computer friend would be a means of making money for me or my employer or a help for my country - though I loved my country then and still do, and I have no objection to making money. I did not even dream of such a worthy cause as helping the poor and handicapped of the world using this marvelous new machine. No, my dream was filled with the wild excitement of seeing a machine act like a human being, at least in many ways.

Dream shattered is a common theme of modern American literature. F. Scott Fitzgerald explores the theme in his masterpiece The Great Gatsby.
