Abstract : The use of automation in uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) is being explored using simulation to develop a better balance of system autonomy with human interaction for optimal human-system performance. Integrating fixed levels of automation into elements of UAV control has resulted in improved performance of some tasks, but less so when the automation does not fit appropriately to changing UAV tasks and environments. As a consequence, recent research has focused on automation that can be changed during UAV operation. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of operators for some UAV tasks of interest under automation that could be changed (adaptable), fixed automation, and no automation. A secondary aim was to examine the use of automation and its effect on the performance of these tasks in different area densities. Thirty eight participants from the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) Edinburgh controlled the sensor of an UAV and undertook typical tasks in a maritime environment. Sensor control was manipulated to be fully automated (fixed), completely manual, or adjustable by the participant between automated and manual modes (adaptable). The results showed that fixed sensor control produced superior performance compared to manual control across tasks, but adaptable control produced additional time improvements compared to fixed control. The benefits of adaptable automation of sensor control and future research directions are discussed.

We propose that representing stages and levels of automation on a decision ladder (DL) could help to identify information requirements for designing automation interfaces. We look at automated financial trading systems, a domain with variable degrees of automation (DOA). We give examples of modelling a financial trading task for two DOAs: basket trading (a low DOA) and trend following trading (a high DOA). On the resulting DLs, both human and automated information-processing activities are presented. The steps and states of knowledge allocated to automation are first categorized by the commonly known four stages of automation, and then shaded to represent the level of automation in each stage. This work advances the understanding of automated trading, and automation in general, and may provide a deeper representation of human-automation interactions and thus better understanding of design requirements.

There has been great interest lately in automation issues, spurred partly by accidents and incidents attributed to automation factors, and partly by a recognition that automation related problems can be both highly subtle and very dangerous. One of the reasons underlying automation-related problems is the relatively indiscriminate application of automation based on technological availability rather than operator need. This has placed system operators in roles that are poorly suited to human capabilities. A more productive approach to automation and humans would be to recognize the need to maintain appropriate roles for the human operator, the need to match automation functionality to operator tasks, the need for the human interface to make automation functions highly visible to the operator, and the potential for operator over- and under-reliance on the automation.

Industrial automation is a means of simplifying production jobs and for providing speed with accuracy for work elements involved. In broader technical terms, industries automation can be stated on a system that consists of relating coordinating, integrating machines, mechanisms, devices and control to the extent that partial or complete processing of production inputs is accomplished automatically without the assistance of intervention of human being. Industrial automation may be categorized into two i.e. full automation and cost effective automation.
