Abstract:
Abstract magnified image As an important class of heterocyclic scaffolds, 2‐imidazolines have attracted the attention from the chemists interested in natural products, pharmaceutical chemistry, synthetic organic chemistry, coordination chemistry, and homogeneous catalysis. To fulfill the demand of structural diversity, many efficient methods towards 2‐imidazolines, as well as modifications of traditional methods, have been reported in the past two decades. 2‐Imidazolines have been developed as ligands in homogeneous catalysis, for the substitution on the nitrogen atom that provides an opportunity for fine‐tuning of the electronic effect. This review summarizes recent advances in the synthesis of 2‐imidazolines and their applications in homogeneous catalysis. Keywords:

Abstract The cover picture shows the concept of operating a homogeneous catalyst under continuous operation conditions: The recycling of molecular‐weight‐enlarged transition‐metal complexes by suitable filtration methods and equipment in order to combine the advantages of both classical homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Various aspects of molecular‐weight enlargement and immobilization of catalysts, and recent developments, are reported in the Microreview by D. Vogt et al. on p. 4011 ff.

Homogeneous catalysts have many attractive properties, such as high selectivities. However, many homogeneous catalytic systems cannot be commercialized because of difficulties associated with separating the products from the catalyst. Recent approaches to tackling this problem are reviewed and compared.

Gold complexes have emerged in the last few years as excellent catalysts in numerous homogeneous transformations involving the activation of carbon-carbon multiple bonds towards the attack of a large variety of nucleophiles. This article gives a brief overview of this enticing subject and identifies some of the most important aspects of homogeneous gold catalysis in organic synthesis focusing on the research done in our laboratory.
