Abstract:
The objective of this study was to understand the usage pattern of mobile phones nowadays by the male science students and to check whether they are aware of the fact that the various risk factors associated to their health are these cellular phones only. Cell phones are considered to be one of the most speedily emerging technologies in the human race especially in younger generation within a short span of time. Youth is more inclined towards using mobile phones for activities other than communication than older generation because in adolescent stage, people are more susceptible to changing fashion trends and style, building them more Tech savvy which creates certain behavioral disorders. The fame of the cell phones is followed by an alarm towards the detrimental effects of cell phone radiation. Fatigue, headache, decreased concentration and local irritation and burning are the major effects of excessive usage of cell phones, as stated by various researches. A descriptive survey design was used to extract answers to the questionnaires administrated to 10th, 11th and 12th standard male science students in the Kanpur city, Uttar Pradesh, a state in India. Opinion of 30 skilled physicians in the field of ENT, cardiology and IVF specialists were also taken. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study concludes that the use of mobile phones is quite common among the science students besides considering it as a status symbol; they treat it as their necessity of life. The crucial role played by parents, schools and the publicity due to advertisements gives a push to such adoption behavior. Key words: Mobile phones; Science students; Health; ParentsKeywords:

The importance of the mobile phone is evidenced by predictions that there will be 1.76 billion smartphone users worldwide at the start of 2015. A country that is spearheading this movement toward the digital era is India.Today mobiles are used by 75% of the people around the world. It has become an integral part of everybody's daily life. This study investigates usage patterns of, and attitude about, cell phones among university students in a mature market such as (United States) and a rapidly growing new market such as (India) by surveying students in each country. For India, students between the ages of 21-25 years were surveyed from Presidency College MBA students and for the United States, the sample was collected by internet surveys done at UCLA students of the age group of 19-25 years during Sep-Dec 2015. Key findings from the study include similarities in the usage of phones to communicate with others and in the perception of mobile phone usage in public settings, and differences in the use of text messaging popular apps and mobile phone conduct while driving and in public places such as restaurants and hospitals. For India, students between the age of 21-25 years were surveyed and for the United States, the sample was collected by internet surveys done at UCLA students of the same age group. Overall these results suggest that students in India use mobile phones differently from their American counterparts. The findings also showed that there is hardly any gender difference in usage patterns and preference with regards to mobile phones.

In Nigeria, mobile phones have been instrumental to the rapid increase in telecommunications accessibility. Mobile phones have become integral part of daily life among the general population and college/university students. Several studies have found that the use of mobile phones among college/university students has brought about a profound and diverse pool of knowledge. However, mobile phone usage also has its adverse effects. This paper examined the evolution of mobile phones in Nigeria and the concomitant positive and adverse effects of its usage amongst students in tertiary institutions. It identified the positive effects to include easy access to information, instructional usage and personal convenience; while the adverse effects include distraction in the classroom, reduced cognitive ability, cheating during examinations, cyber bulling, poor writing skills and addiction. The paper then concluded that though mobile phones have positive effects on the educational and socio-economic development of Nigerian students, university authorities should take a more proactive role to reduce its adverse effects by either prohibiting the use of mobile phones during lecture hours or encouraging students to switch off their phones or put them on silence mode while receiving lectures. The significance of this paper for the Nigerian educational system is that if its recommendations are implemented, the positive effects of mobile phone usage will then overshadow its negative effects.

Authors have noted that young people like to use the Internet and mobile phones for communication purposes. This paper reports results concerning use of the Internet and mobile phones for communication from a survey of 1340 English secondary schoolchildren conducted in 2002 and examines whether the use of either of these forms of communication technologies occurs at the expense of the other amongst this group. In agreement with background literature, it was found that communication via the Internet and mobile phones was popular amongst young people and small but significant positive correlations amongst the sample for measures of the use of the Internet and mobile phones for communication purposes were also discovered. This latter finding implies that these communication media are complementary rather than substitutable amongst young people. This article discusses a number of possible reasons for the popularity of the Internet and mobile phones for communication amongst young people and states that the positive correlations imply that children are ‘rational actors’ where communication via modern technology is concerned. That is, young people use the Internet and mobile phones strategically to meet different communication needs. It is concluded that as both of these forms of communication technology can be employed to achieve different purposes, the result is that neither negates the use of the other amongst this group.
