    Abstract:
    Morphological allometry refers to patterns of covariance between body parts resulting from variation in body size. Whether measured during growth (ontogenetic allometry), among individuals at similar developmental stage (static allometry), or among populations or species (evolutionary allometry), allometric relationships are often tight and relatively invariant. Consequently, it has been suggested that allometries have low evolvability and could constrain phenotypic evolution by forcing evolving species along fixed trajectories. Alternatively, allometric relationships may result from natural selection for functional optimization. Despite nearly a century of active research, distinguishing between these alternatives remains difficult, partly due to wide differences in the meaning assigned to the term allometry. In particular, a broad use of the term, encompassing any monotonic relationship between body parts, has become common. This usage breaks the connection to the proportional growth regulation that motivated Huxley's original narrow-sense use of allometry to refer to power-law relationships between traits. Focusing on the narrow-sense definition of allometry, we review here evidence for and against the allometry-as-a-constraint hypothesis. Although the low evolvability and the evolutionary invariance of the static allometric slope observed in some studies suggest a possible constraining effect of this parameter on phenotypic evolution, the lack of knowledge about selection on allometry prevents firm conclusions.

    In a soil bioassay, adult Deroceras reticulatum (Stylommatophora: Limacidae) and three different weight-classes of young Arion lusitanicus (Stylommatophora: Arionidae) were exposed to a single dosage (170 dauer larvae per g of soil) of the nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita monoxenically associated with the bacterium Moraxella osloensis. Groups of 10 slugs were continuously exposed to nematodes for 4 days, and then transferred individually to Petri-dishes containing a disc of Chinese cabbage as food. Food consumption—measured by image analysis—and slug mortality were recorded daily for 10 days. Food consumption was inhibited in both slug species tested. D. reticulatum stopped feeding 6 days after the start of nematode treatment, while all A. lusitanicus continued to feed. However, in the three weight-classes of A. lusitanicus (0.15 g, 0.24 g, 0.45 g), food consumption was reduced by at least 50 %. The greatest reduction in feeding, nearly 90 %, was noted in the smallest A. lusitanicus. The nematodes successfully killed D. reticulatum but were less efficient at killing young A. lusitanicus. At the end of the experiment, mortality was highest in D. reticultatum (98 %) and the smallest weight-class of A. lusitanicus (47 %). There was almost no mortality in the largest weight-class of A. lusitanicus treated with nematodes. P. hermaphrodita associated with M. osloensis can thus be considered as a biological control agent for young stages of A. lusitanicus for its effect as a feeding inhibitor, rather than for its ability to kill the slugs.

    During postnatal ontogeny of vertebrates, allometric trends in certain morphological units or dimensions can shift drastically among isometry, positive allometry, and negative allometry. However, detailed patterns of allometric transitions in certain timings have not been explored well. Identifying the presence and nature of allometric shifts is essential for understanding the patterns of changes in relative size and shape and the proximal factors that are controlling these changes mechanistically. Allometric trends in 10 selected vertebrae (cervical 2–caudal 2) from hatchlings to very mature individuals of Alligator mississippiensis (Archosauria, Crocodylia) are reported in the present study. Allometric coefficients in 12 vertebral dimensions are calculated and compared relative to total body length, including centrum, neural spine, transverse process, zygapophysis, and neural pedicle. During the postnatal growth, positive allometry is the most common type of relative change (10 of the 12 dimensions), although the diameter of the neural canal shows a negative allometric trend. However, when using spurious breaks (i.e. allometric trends subdivided into growth stages using certain growth events, and key body sizes and/or ages), vertebral parts exhibit various pathways of allometric shifts. Based on allometric trends in three spurious breaks, separated by the end of endochondral ossification (body length: approximnately 0.9 m), sexual maturity (1.8 m), and the stoppage of body size increase (2.8 m), six types of ontogenetic allometric shifts are established. Allometric shifts exhibit a wide range from positive allometry restricted only in the early postnatal stage (Type I) to life-long positive allometry (Type VI). This model of ontogenetic allometric shifts is then applied to interpret potential mechanisms (causes) of allometric changes, such as (1) growth itself (when allometric trend gradually decreases to isometric or negative allometric change: Type II–IV allometric shift); (2) developmental constraint (when positive allometry is limited only in the early growth stage: Type I allometric shift); and (3) functional or biomechanical drive (when positive allometry continues throughout ontogeny: Type VI allometric shift).

Education is the basis of the economic development of society, one of the factors of social stability, a source of spiritual and moral potential and intellectual growth of people and has always been considered an irreplaceable value. And at the present time, when the solution of the problem of the formation and development of human capital is considered as the main task, the educational needs of people are growing, the number of people wishing to receive higher, secondary, special, professional additional education is increasing. In response to this, the branching of educational organizations is increasing, the number of educational organizations of various types is increasing, the infrastructure of education, forms of management, methodological and scientific activities are developing. Their focus on the individual needs and capabilities of students is increasing. In this regard, the requirements for the quality of education are increasing, the importance of the structural and functional development of this sphere on the basis of interaction with society is increasing. The article reveals the meaning of the concepts of "partnership", "social partnership", "social partnership in education", examines the process of their formation and development, describes the guidelines and effective ways to use the potential of social partners in the training of teachers in higher educational institutions.     The field of allometry is concerned with scaling relationships between various quantitative characterizations of organisms in relation to body size. This chapter discusses the allometric scaling laws of physiological rates and their ecological implications. It argues that the allometric scaling laws emerge because, with increasing body size, the mass of the system of tubes required to fuel the metabolism and remove waste grows faster with body size than the metabolic activity it supports.

    Static nestling, adult and ontogenetic allometry were analysed in three species of finches. Static nestling allometry was very similar across age in early ontogeny and among species and could be approximated by a single matrix of phenotypic variances and covariances. The first eigenvector of this matrix showed negative allometry of bill and tarsus to mass, but positive for wing length to mass. Adult static allometry was also very similar among species, but differed from nestling pattern. In adults the bill had a positive allometry in relation to tarsus and wing, but negative to mass, while tarsus and wing were unrelated to mass. The ontogenetic allometry in each species was very similar to nestling static allometry. Viewed in relation to final size, bill characters grew more slowly than body characters, but for a longer time, which created the difference between adult and nestling allometric patterns. There were differences among species both with regard to elevation and slope of allometric coefficients, suggesting that the differences among species came about by changes in the three fundamental ontogenetic parameters namely growth rate, onset of growth and offset of growth.

    Sexual dimorphism of body size has been the subject of numerous studies, but few have examined sexual shape dimorphism (SShD) and its evolution. Allometry, the shape change associated with size variation, has been suggested to be a main component of SShD. Yet little is known about the relative importance of the allometric and non-allometric components for the evolution of SShD. We investigated sexual dimorphism in wing shape in the nine species of the Drosophila melanogaster subgroup. We used geometric morphometrics to characterise wing shape and found significant SShD in all nine species. The amount of shape difference and the diversity of the shape changes evolved across the group. However, mapping the divergence of SShD onto the phylogeny of the Drosophila melanogaster subgroup indicated that there is little phylogenetic signal. Finally, allometry accounted for a substantial part of SShD, but did not explain the bulk of evolutionary divergence in SShD because allometry itself was found to be evolutionarily plastic. SShD in the Drosophila wing can evolve rapidly and therefore shows only weak phylogenetic structure. The variable contribution of allometric and non-allometric components to the evolutionary divergence of SShD and the evolutionary plasticity of allometry suggest that SShD and allometry are influenced by a complex interaction of processes.

    HLA-B-associated transcript 3 (BAT3) was originally identified as one of the genes located within human major histocompatibility complex. It encodes a large proline-rich protein with unknown function. In this study, we found that a fragment of the BAT3 gene product interacts with a candidate tumor suppressor, DAN, in the yeast-based two-hybrid system. We cloned the full-length rat BAT3 cDNA from a fibroblast 3Y1 cDNA library. Our sequence analysis has demonstrated that rat BAT3 cDNA is 3617 nucleotides in length and encodes a full-length BAT3 (1098 amino acids) with an estimated molecular mass of 114,801 daltons, which displays an 87.4% identity with human BAT3. The deletion experiment revealed that the N-terminal region (amino acid residues 1-80) of DAN was required for the interaction with BAT3. Green fluorescent protein-tagged BAT3 was largely localized in the cytoplasm of COS cells. Northern hybridization showed that BAT3 mRNA was expressed in all the adult rat tissues examined but predominantly in testis. In addition, the level of BAT3 mRNA expression was more downregulated in some of the transformed cells, including v-mos- and v-Ha-ras-transformed 3Y1 cells, than in the parental cells.

    Ontogenetic and static allometries describe how a character changes in size when the size of the organism changes during ontogeny and among individuals measured at the same developmental stage, respectively. Understanding the relationship between these two types of allometry is crucial to understanding the evolution of allometry and, more generally, the evolution of shape. However, the effects of ontogenetic allometry on static allometry remain largely unexplored. Here, we first show analytically how individual variation in ontogenetic allometry and body size affect static allometry. Using two longitudinal data sets on ontogenetic and static allometry, we then estimate variances and covariances for the different parameters of the ontogenetic allometry defined in our model and assess their relative contribution to the static allometric slope. The mean ontogenetic allometry is the main parameter that determines the static allometric slope, while the covariance between the ontogenetic allometric slope and body size generates most of the discrepancies between ontogenetic and static allometry. These results suggest that the apparent evolutionary stasis of the static allometric slope is not generated by internal (developmental) constraints but more likely results from external constraints imposed by selection.

    A series of 21 variables representing foot skeletal elements were measured on a sample of 152 Japanese macaques to examine the relationship between ontogenetic and static adult allometry. The similarity of ontogenetic and static allometries was tested by comparing the multivariate allometric coefficients extracted by the first principal component. In both groups, the metatarsals were positive allometry and the tarsal portion and phalanges were negative allometry compared with total size. In these measurements, static adult allometry resembled the process of ontogenetic allometry. Comparison of the anterior portion of the tarsus with the posterior portion revealed that the latter portion was positive allometry in ontogeny, and negative allometry in adult. The discrepancy of allometric coefficients between groups was also seen in the component bones of the hallux. From the results, there can be differences in size and shape relationships among ontogenetic and adult group. Therefore, at least in these measurements, static adult allometry is not an accurate guide to processes of relative growth.
