Considers the maritime links between the ports of land corridors and the overseas ports at the other ends of those links, including issues that relate to maritime tariffs, service frequency and reliability, and the scope of destinations served. Three basic types of container services are hub-to-hub services supported by feeder services to and from the hubs, pendulum services, and feeder services. The main indicators of port performance in a corridor context include (1) the Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (LSCI); (2) the number of vessel calls at the corridor port; (3) the shipping rates to and from main destinations; (4) the sailing time to main destinations; (5) the number of cargo transshipments between the port and main origins; (6) the average number of containers loaded/offloaded per vessel; (7) the transit time from port to inland facility (if any); (8) the time limits for containers to be returned to port; and (9) the deposit required for containers removed from port.

The nations of sub-Saharan Africa rely heavily on ports, ships and rail and road transportation. By late 2019 global seaborne trade had gathered momentum and raised expectations within the shipping industry. Global containerized trade increased because dry bulk cargo was in demand, whereas growth in crude oil shipments decelerated. However, during the first quarter of 2020 the beneficial prospects for seaborne trade had dimmed. Risks such as increased inflexible policies and the rise of trade protectionism and the after-effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the economy are drawbacks to a brighter outlook. This chapter offers an analysis of the region's maritime transportation and examines the challenges that may help or hinder the sustainable development of the infrastructure needed to take advantage of the benefits that could accrue from the blue economy.
