Depiction
The writing of “Characters” was at the same time one of the most prolific and the most significant phases of literary activity in the seventeenth century. Though many of these books of “Characters” have been forgotten, the titles of over one hundred and fifty are still remembered—enough certainly to show how popular the fashion of such writing was. Furthermore, its significance becomes apparent when we consider what prose fiction owes to it; for, through the periodical essay of the eighteenth century, the old formal “Character” passed into the novel and become a part of it.

Willa Cather's My Antonia deserves the honor of a classic model of character novels in American letters. The major feature of its character depiction is the abundant use of character juxtaposition, which results in the perfect mixture of character, structure and theme. This article analyzes how Willa Cather's My Antonia reflects the features of the novel of character, as stated in Muir's The Structure of Novel, in terms of plot and character, and explains Cather's unique technique of character juxtaposition by way of the relationship among character, structure and theme.

Dreaming depiction enjoys a long history in the traditional ancient Chinese literature. However, due to the fact that most dream-depictions deviated from reality and were full of superstitious beliefs, dream-depiction failed to get high comments. There are more than sixty stories depicting dreams in San Ya and Liang Pai which accounted for one third of all the stories. However, few people had made researches of the dream-depiction in them. Though most of the dream-depiction are scattered among the stories and only few of the stories totally depict dreams, it is still worthwhile to study their cultural values and their narrative functions.

Dramatic depiction in documentaries often incites concerns regarding its possible failure to vouch for the authenticity of the subject or the chance that it might obscure the truth. This owes to the characteristic of documentaries as a genre that depicts “real subjects” based on “reality.” An important factor that sustains the life of the genre is the audience's belief that the film they are watching is “reality.” As a customary understanding of the documentary genre, this definition is also closely related to the fundamental question of “what is a documentary.” Whether it is related to the subject itself or the trust between the film and the audience, concerns over the authenticity of the depiction lie in the characteristic of the genre that is based on “reality” seen through the subjective involvement of a director. Another need to understand the problem of dramatic depiction in documentaries is the fact that dramatic depiction has been a central issue in the discussion on the genre since its birth. It is then necessary to explore why dramatic depiction has had such a close relationship with the documentary genre. To find out what influence dramatic depiction wields over the aesthetics of a documentary film, one must first determine the role of dramatic depiction in the film. This article examines the effects of dramatic depiction in Old Partner and Nanook of the North to find an angle of analysis. Old Partner resembles Nanook of the North, the first documentary film, in several ways including the romanticizations of the subject and its use of dramatic depiction as the driving force of the piece. The two films show that the issue of dramatic depiction is a timeless one in the discourse on documentary films, and also that dramatic depiction serves as a foundation for aesthetic achievement in the genre. The significance of dramatic depiction is highlighted in this article. This article examines the function of dramatic depiction rather than the paradoxical nature of documentary films as a “dramatic depiction” of “reality.”

Imagination plays an important role in depiction. In this chapter, I focus on photography and I discuss the role imagination plays in photographic depiction. I suggest to follow a broadly Waltonian view, but I also depart from it in several places. I start by discussing a general feature of the relation of depiction, namely the fact that it is a ternary relation which always involves "something external." I then turn my attention to Walton's view, where this third relatum of the relation of depiction is largely analyzed in terms of the role imagination plays in depiction. I consider the objection to his view that not all cases of depiction involve imagination – for instance, documentary photographs – as well as Walton's own strategy to face this objection, and I argue that it is partly adequate and partly wrong. As we will see, first, it is an unnecessary mistake to insist too heavily on the fact that photographs are produced in a mechanical way (as opposed to, say, paintings), and second, the notion of "imagining-seeing," as it is articulated by Walton, is perhaps too strong and does not entirely do justice to the external character of the role imagination plays here.
