Governing energy communities: the role of actors and expertise in business model innovation

2021
This chapter explores the range of actors and expertise involved in the innovation of energy communities. Building on recent work that identifies a wide range of business model archetypes, the chapter examines the extent to which single actors create, deliver and capture value by themselves. It explores three ideal-typical governance arrangements – characterised by the idea of doing it yourself, forming an alliance, or someone else doing it for you – to investigate how the actors and expertise involved facilitate the realisation of different archetypes. It subsequently demonstrates how some archetypes require a combination of actors and expertise.
