22 Orally administered xylose isomerase converts fructose to glucose – a promising approach in case of fructose malabsorption

2010
Clinical proof: A preliminary observational study was performed with the capsules containing Xylose Isomerase. Volunteers with diagnosed symptomatic fructose malabsorption were advised to eat fructose-containing meals with or without the capsules and monitor the symptoms. 67% of the participants stated a „good effect“, 22% „little effect“ and 11% „no effect“ of the XI containing capsules in respect to intestinal irritation after consumption of fructose. A double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial is currently in progress. The primary outcome of this study is the reduction of hydrogen production in the large intestine after ingestion of fructose with capsules containing verum or placebo.
