New color filter arrays and performance analysis

2012
To reduce the cost, size and complexity, the digital camera acquire images using a single image sensor overlaid with a color filter array, which is a mosaic of spectrally selective filters and allows only one color component to be sensed at each pixel. The missing two component of each pixel have to be estimated by methods known as demosaicking. The demosaicking algorithm and the CFA design are crucial for the quality of the output images. This paper describes the different arrangement of color filter and analyses the influence on the performance and computational efficiency of the demosaicking solution, then presents new arrangements of the color filter in the CFA. At last, some design rules are summarized. Experiment, using several RGB CFAs and a universal demosaicking solution introduced in this paper demonstrates that the effectiveness of different arrangements of color filter and superiority of the new CFA patterns.
