The Anopheline (Diptera: Culicidae) Vectors of Malaria and Bancroftian Filariasis in Flores Island, Indonesia

1983
Field studies were carried out in a coastal region of northern Flores Island, Republic of Indonesia, to determine the mosquito vector(s) of malaria and bancroftian filariasis. Mosquito collections in July 1979 and January through December 1980 indicated that Anopheles subpictus and An. vagus were the most abundant man-biting anophelines in the area. Malaria sporozoites were found in 3 of 2273 An. subpictus (2 in July 1979 and 1 in February 1980). One of 286 An. barbirostris was also positive for sporozoites (in March 1980). Infective larvae of W. bancrofti were recorded in An. subpictus during January, March, May, June, September, and November 1980 (prevalence of 1.3%). Anopheles vagus also harbored infective W. bancrofti larvae in June, July, November, and December (prevalence of 0.6%). Malariometric data showed high prevalences of parasites and splenomegaly in the young and adult human population and that malaria was holoendemic.
