Pathology of Colonic Cystic Fibrosis Obstructions

1995
I have had the opportunity to go to Liverpool to see the slides of Dr. Smith’s five cases representing strictures of ascending colon in cystic fibrosis. The lesions in all cases were remarkably similar. In fact, all were scarring lesions. The mucosa was nearly normal, and the most intriguing feature was the presence of an extensive fibrosis in the submucosa, which was the cause of the stenosis. Macroscopically, in one of these cases, the caecum was dilated, with widening of the submucosa.
