International Panorama of Human Rights of Women: A View from Colombia

2011
Gender studies give a perspective of the status of women, thatusually differs from the rights recognized in international lawas well as in domestic law. Gender equity and women’s humanrights originate permanent debates that question the capacityto offer an effective protection for women. The traditional concepts of human rights have been developed from an androcentric perspective, that in many cases ignores the differences between men and women. Under this circumstances, it is necesary to study women’s human rights applying gender perspectives, which imposes duties to the states as guarantors of the well-being of the individuals. To analyze women’s human rights in Colombia implies tounderstand why, in spite of the efforts that have been made and the reached profits, persists the incapacity to offer an effective protection to the women, especially native women, colored women and farmer women as much in peaceful times as during armed conflicts.
