During America’s colonial period, missionizing educators tried to school American Indians in such early colleges as Virginia, Harvard, William and Mary, and Dartmouth. This paper examines the range of native responses to these colonial college missions and concludes that intense cultural conflict was a major factor in their ultimate failure.
