The influence of somatostatin on intestinal absorption: Studies with fluorescein—sodium

1980
Abstract The influence of somatostatin upon the absorption of fluorescein-sodium, a water-soluble and easily absorbed compound, was studied in 9 subjects. During an intravenous infusion of 500 μg somatostatin per hour, serum fluorescein concentration and urinary fluorescein excretion were significantly reduced. These results demonstrate that somatostatin administration reduces the effective rate of intestinal absorption of substances independent of any effect of digestive enzymes.
