Project54 system software architecture

2004
Project54 is an effort to incorporate embedded mobile computing equipment and wireless networking into New Hampshire State Police cruisers. At the center of the system is the Application Manager - an executable application running under Windows 2000. It manages the execution of a set of applications. Most of the applications control individual electronic devices. The Application Manager allows one-to-one communication between applications. Using one-to-one communication applications can control, and receive feedback from, multiple electronic devices. Such applications can implement system-wide functions. Specifically, the voice interface and the logging functions are implemented as applications. In order to avoid hard coding data in the applications the Project54 system software uses the Registry to store configuration data and parameter values. The Project54 system was successfully tested in five New Hampshire State Police cruisers during everyday operation. The system is currently being installed in 75 NH State Police cruisers.
