Thickness measurements of carbon stripper foils using optical transmittance

Abstract A very simple system was built to measure the thickness of carbon stripper foils. The optical transmittance of a foil is uniquely related to its thickness. Absolute thicknesses were obtained by yield measurements in a Rutherford scattering experiment, using a sub-barrier 16 O ion beam. Comparison of thicknesses obtained by differing methods is performed.
