In 1971 Damadian [1] first showed that there was a difference in the NMR relaxation behavior of benign and malignant rat tumors and proposed that it might be possible to detect cancer in vivo using NMR. Subsequent experiments have confirmed and extended this discovery to human tissues [2, 3]
