Defect detection by acoustic emission. Part 2

1982
Experiments evaluating a company's ability to detect an impending pipeline failure demonstrated that the acoustic emissions method allows the detection of flaws in time to prevent them from failing. The results also indicated that different defects may have different emission characteristics with respect to behavior with increasing pressure. Spurious noise arose from numerous sources such as pipe movement in newly backfilled portions, movement of a packing pig, and dust or rain falling on unburied portions of the line.
