A taxonomy of educational games compatible with the LOM-IEEE data model

2008
Computerized educational games taxonomy compatible with the standard specification of IEEE’s LOM (Learning Object Model) metadata is presented. A mapping between the terms described in the taxonomy and the elements described in the mentioned standard was carried out, allowing a game’s description within a learning object (LO) environment. The goal is to define specifications for LOs of game type, in this context referred as Game Object (GO). Such GOs are digital games with or without implicit educational rules, which can be linked to appropriate planned learning activities. The games taxonomy will enable that the game object is seen under an educational perspective, once it is based on the set of LOM’s educational metadata. This work is part of a modeling effort for developing an intelligent repository of game objects in order to make available a great variety of games, adaptive or not, cooperative or not, to different pedagogical contexts in Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs). It is assumed that the pedagogical model must guide the conception of the games taxonomy process, since the GOs belonging to the repository are being modeled to be applied in different stages of the Learning Activity (LA).
