Qualitative Research on Main Stressors of Patients' Family Members with Psychological Problems in Surgical ICU

Objective To explore the main stressors of the patients' family members with psychological problems in surgical ICU(SICU).Methods By somi-structured interview,12 family members of SICU patients were investigated.The data were obtained and analyzed by means of contents analysis.Results The main stressors of the SICU family members of SICU patients included:worries due to unsuccessful rescue work(worries about the deterioration of disease/death,the low quality of medical care and the poor long-term outcome of the patient),shortage of good communication with medical staff and the financial burden for rescuing the patient.Conclusion The medical staff should attach more importance to improving the quality of medical and rescue success rate.Then,they should keep effective communication with the patient's family members to introduce the patient's conditions,treatment,laboratory results and bad prognosis in time.Nurses should communicate and instruct the family members initiatively by establishing consulting telephone.The medical insurance system should be implemented gradually and the system of medical social workers should be promoted.Finally,patients' relatives are suggested to provide spirit and material support for them for relieving their stress and promoting their physical and psychological adaptation.
