FAR-FIELD FLUID-STRUCTURE INTERACTION: A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE DOUBLE ASYMPTOTIC AND PLANE WAVE APPROXIMATIONS

1995
This paper is concerned with the numerical modelling of the hydroelastic interaction between a structure and surrounding fluid, with particular emphasis on the far-field effect of the fluid medium on the response of floating and submerged structures. The phenomena of reflections radiating from artificial boundaries are fist explained. Then the paper discusses two formulations which simulate the effect of a non-reflecting boundary: the Doubly Asymptotic Approximation (DAA) and the Plane Wave Approximation (PWA). Next, exponential and step plane waves are both employed to shock loading. The implementation details of the proposed formulation are presented and discussed. Numerical results which serve as a comparison between the boundary element DAA and the PWA are the presented. Conclusions are drawn the final section.
